Are there any anime/manga fans here who listen to something other than J-Pop and J-Rock (I listen to some like L'arc-en-ciel, TM Revoulution; so don't think I'm offending anybody.) I listen to pretty much everything, from My Chemical Romance to Tchaivosky; just out of curiousity, are there any other anime fans who are willing to listen to music besides J-Pop and J-Rock?
[EDIT: Added the [OT] label. -TK] |

Have you tried J-Trance? Trance artists make remixes of J-pop music. Or maybe J-Punk? Like Brahman or Hi-Standard. Or J-Rap with Zeebra or the Mad Capsule Markets or J-Reggae with ketsumeishi?

I believe he's trying to ask if anyone here listens to non-Japanese music which unfortunately gets locked every single time. And yes I do, just because I happen to like anime doesn't mean that's all that I want to listen to.

Well then I suggest he try something like I mentioned above. He might like it.

I couldn't agree more. I'm very much into anime but when it comes to music, it goes far more than just j-pop stuff. In fact, i dont really know much abt it...but dat doesn't make me a less than an anime fan, right? |

No, it doesn't make you less. J-Pop isn't the only thing used in anime, there's all sorts of J-something that is used, so you don't have to be a brainiac about the music.

Dude, I'm the biggest My Chemical Romance fan possibly in their whole fandom, and I live at concerts. *my icon is from a comic I draw for them, and is the Demolition lover girl*
The J-rock fans I come across online and at conventions either listen to nothing but J-rock, or are pretty well rounded with the American music scene. However the typical anime fan who hides in their room and never sees the light of day seems to know only J-pop music, especially if the music has been featured in an anime. That and the instrumental pieces. Then the anime fans who actually have lives, they seem to have norm musical taste with mainstream to indie mixed in with the anime themes on their playlist. |

Of course non-japanese indigiounous people listen to music other than japanese music. At least I'd hope the majority was in agreement there. I know a few people here in america who say that they listen to nothing but japanese music (same people who worship the almighty Japanese for no more reason that they're japanese) and well, they're just a bunch of messes. 300 pound messes. With no social lives.

Yes indeed I listen to non J-pop or J-what-have-you music. As of right now my avatar itself is the cover of Nas's Illmatic (1994) and from time to time i put various rappers with like two bars of music for a quote. I'm not saying that J-Pop or anything is bad; actually I happen to like Shikinouta form Samurai Champloo but it's not the best song I've ever heard. I like Nas, Eminem, Papoose (look out for him he's the savior), Jadakiss and a whole load of other people. J-Pop is not my priorty when I go out and "buy" music, but most times I would find it inapropriate if I was watching Akira and all of sudden I heard the base line to "Deep Cover" come on or something like that.

I think I've covered fairly familiar ground with my music collecting efforts...my collection covers stuff from Beethoven to Frank Sinatra to Buzzcocks to John Zorn to The Shaggs.
Come to think of it: I wonder how many die-hard anime fans who are into Gankutsuoh own anything in The Stranglers discography? |

Definitely into music period.
I'm most hyped for Saves the Day's new cd, and you can probably find me listening to Jimmy Eat World, Pavement, Weezer, Death Cab For Cutie, at the drive-in, or The White Stripes. I might be getting back into old American punk and hardcore. I never cared for English punk, but I've always liked old American punk, like that era Descendents and Bad Religion, T.S.O.L., Minor Threat, and so on. I also like some hip-hop; Mos Def, Del the Funky Homosapien, Saul Williams, Lyrics Born, Tribe Called Quest, Talib Kweli and the like. And then some of the newer melodic hardcore stuff like old Norma Jean, Fear Before the March of Flames, The Bled, mewithoutYou. And then the post-rock/experimental bands like The Mars Volta, Mogwai, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, The Sound of Animals Fighting, Explosions in the Sky, De Facto, Tom Waits. Right now, I'm really liking Head Automatica. Daryl Palumbo and Dan the Automater make a great team. |

Because my interests in music and anime are separate, I almost never listen to Japanese music. I mostly listen to metal with a strong lean toward progressive and thrash metal. I make sure to get a healthy dose of post hardcore with some hardcore, metalcore, punk, indie rock, and pseudo-emo mixed in too. You won't hear much of the stuff I listen to on the radio.

Heh heh, noticing earlier comments...
Well, since music is one of the aspects about anime I like the most, I listen to alot of anime soundtrack music, and J-pop / J-rock. I honestly rarely find myself listening to anything else. It makes me wonder if I actually like the music more than I like the anime itself. Does that make me one of those otaku types that "have no lives" or "never sees the light of day", I wonder? Well anyway, I'm satisfied with my likes and dislikes. Listening to Japanese music is a way for me to get anime without being able to get anime, like when I am travelling, walking to the store, doing dishes, etc. Because there is nothing fundamentally different about music from other countries that is in the same genre as anime music, then there should be no reason why I shouldn't like alot of non-Japanese pop or rock. But I don't, there is just nothing out there that interests me the way Japanese stuff does. I don't understand it. In fact, I very much hate "pop" music (ie top 40 stuff). But if it happens to be sung in Japanese, I love it. I don't get it. |
