I liked the original Gundam. The pilots were interesting and seemed to have a proper martial attitude.

Then I watch Gundam Seed and see this whiney brat who has to be dragged to the cockpit so that he can reluctantly save his friends before he gets back to whining.

So which of the Gundams other than the original have non whiney brat pilots?

Thanks!

I don't think Gundan Seed Destiny had a whiny little brat in it, though i only watched the first 8 episodes. It's pretty good but i like Gundam Wing better

I have to agree I think Wing is the best. No whining, no crying, just fighting. I also love how Gudam Wing uses historical events from the past, for its story. And Gundam Seed is a close second.

Wait, you're saying that Amuro isn't a whiny brat?

Shin doesn't count?
I don't know if he counts as whiny, but he's an a**hole, but he is a brat with no brain anyway.

Gundam 8th MS Team: The pilots are all older, and there are no "whiny" kids...

Gundam Wing: Doe'snt really have "whiny" pilots, except for a few episdodes where the blonde haired one (Anime smile" sry i know how to say it but cannot spell it) starts "whining" about what their doing and trys to stop them.

Gundam SEED: look, kira, just basically had his whole life destroyed as he knew it, and now he has to pilot a huge machine and kill? Heh, I'd like to see you do that, plus Gundam SEED, is an outstanding series, the action is great, and the drama is what makes you want to see more and more, because it can be deep.

So just because he way be "whiny" at first, he gradually gets better in a sense, but even if he did'nt, SEED is great, I love Wing, but SEED, would have to be my favorite!

I'd like to say Amuro is indeed a whiny brat in the original gundam. I mean, Bright says a couple critisizing things about him and he goes and throws a temper tantrum and runs away with the gundam. Yea...Amuro isnt a whiny brat.(if you couldnt tell, that was sarcasism right there.)

And as for Kira, I would be pretty upset if my whole life was turned upside down so suddenly like that also. I mean, he has do something he absolutely hates to protect his friends. And on top of that, he has to fight his best friend and his own people. You would be pretty whiny to if that happened to you. And Kira did stop whining in the end.

I have to say that my favorite Gundam Series are
* 0083 : Stardust Memories
* 08MS Team

Both for the same reasons.
The characters where believable. Unlike a lot of the other series where it's kids piloting mecha.
The shows where more plot orientated as they were not heavily focusing on the mecha that was being piloted.

Go with G Gundam. In that particular Gundam series the characters actually want to fight. Although, people don't like it because they say it's "DBZ with robots." There is some truth to this since it is more of a shounen action series than a space drama. However Gundam is kind of known for "whiney" characters. However, I also thought Kamille from Zeta got over it (he grows up), and Garrod Ran is another one who's more gung ho about things. Plus in Char's Counterattack Amuro definitley drops his whining. But what do you expect? In Gundam these kids are suddenly thrust into war shattering their lives. But overtime they become desensitized and accept their role.

Considering your a fan of the orgional Gundam, you may want to move on to the sequal series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.

I second that
08th must've been the most realistic, the team being a normal team and not some guy with a pumped up suit that can lock on and destroy 19 enemies at once.
0083 may have suffered from the "overpowered villain/protagonist" (ie, spoiler[the zeon mobile armour using single shots to blow out capital ships and almost never getting touched, etc]), but the characters were done well, they didn't seem too outrageous in performance.

That's one weakness of my favorite gundam series, After War Gundam X. The main character isn't "bratty", though he does have issues with authority and acting before thinking, but by the later parts, it seems as if he's untouchable...

Yes. Amuro is a lot less whiny and I really respect both him and Quattro/Char as the "older generation" representations, though I can certainly say Kamille and Katz are about 10 times more annoying to watch than even Shinji from Eva.

It's called character development, a result of good writing, and I highly prefer it over series where the characters are too static and predictable. Through the course of events of a novel, series, or film the character(s) learn, grow, and change somehow for the better or worse caused by the events they experienced along the way. A character with no flaws is boring.

That being said this is one strength of the majority of the Gundam series as a whole. It's also one reason why I like nearly all of them besides the mecha action. Picking a clear favorite is hard though. I have really liked 0083: Stardust Memory, The 08th MS Team, Zeta, Wing, Gundam X, and Seed in particular, each for various reasons ranging from their characters, storylines, action or combinations of all three. The only ones I didn't care for were SD Gundam Force, and 0080: War in the Pocket.

Not only is it "boring", but I believe it's also an attempt to make the story seem more real, like it could happen. By having these whiny characters, unfortunatly, most of us can relate to them. Thus our imagination goes into play and suddenly we're saying quotes from the show and making asses or ourselves...

Do Bernie and Christina from Gundam 0080 count as whinny? I think I remember being serious the whole series and not really complaining about their duties. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly constitues being "whinny".

Neither Bernie or Chris were really whiny. I'd have to say 0080 was the most realistic or at least had the most realistic fight due to the spoiler[fight between the Zaku and the Alex where there was no way someone like a rookie like Bernie could have won and he was still lucky and got as far as cutting the Gundams head off.]
