One more question then, are we allowed to discuss live action dramas based on manga? (Answer's probably no, but I thought I should ask anyway)

Don't make a habit of it. A thread every once in a while is okay, but having a ton of threads on Thundercats and Boondocks and Teen Titans all open at the same time would be a bit much.

Certainly. There are plenty of users on ANN who are big, big fans of things like the live-action Great Teacher Onizuka, Cromartie High, Boogiepop & Others, et al, and such live-action works have more in common with anime & manga than most anime-styled Western cartoons (being direct adaptations of actual manga & anime, for starters).

How are those "American anime?" How are they borrowing from the aesthetic style of Japanese animation?

Look, the definition of "American anime" that we're utilizing here refers to any show produced outside of Japan that borrows some sort of stylistic element typically indicative of anime. Though they are not anime themselves, they do mimic it in some for or another. Joe Normal Adult Swim show, therefore, does not qualify; it's an adult's cartoon, plain & simple.
