I wonder how this will turn out. I didn't think the preview I read in shonen jump was that great, but it seems like it could get a lot better. I still really like the character design though.

I didn't like it all that much either, but maybe the anime will receive an overhaul like Black Cat did.

gah, Shonen Jump = evil... it's likely that they butchered the translation in the "localization" process.
I have read(i.e. own) 10 volumes of this hillarious manga. If you found School Rumble funny, you'll enjoy this manga/anime since the humor is sort of similar (sight gags/parody/craziness).

The first chapters of Gintama aren't as great because (as with many manga that become popular), the author didn't expect his manga to become so popular, so everything gets more polished later on.
And it's one of the funniest manga I've ever read. :D Try not to go by the Viz translation -- though most of it is accurate, they had to tone down the sexual gags a LOT to put it in the US Shonen Jump magazine. Which isn't a good idea, when the first chapter is basically about a strip club, and the series' title itself is a sexual pun...
One of Gintama's best features is its crude humor, so when you try to censor it, you lose most of the joy in the series.

Even reading into what were obviously supposed to be sexual puns and jokes, my enjoyment of the preview in January's Shonen Jump was almost non-existant. Nice art, but still kind of generic. It felt like Kenshin that was attempting to be wild and crazy, but that kind of humor can fail if someone tries something along the lines of putting a monkey in a business suit (just an example, not in the manga). So what if there were aliens that were supposed to be weird? The humor wasn't there for me. I'm not ruling out later chapters, since I've seen manga drastically improve, but man, that first chapter was very stale.

Ironically, I'm pretty sure there IS a monkey in a business suit somewhere in the manga...
It's just a silly samurai parody. The humor is very "Japanese style", with weird puns and parodies on things like Densha Otoko and otaku... but the humor varies to every genre, so keep reading and you're bound to find something that makes you laugh. An anime version of it could make the jokes even funnier, since it's such a vibrant and loud series...

So the Black Cat manga is different than the anime? That makes sense, because I saw the show first and when I started reading the preview, I was confused, because Train didn't start off all evil and hardcore. I liked that about him. Hopefully the manga is good too though. I am also hoping that VIZ licinses Gimtama.

That'll depend on how the response to it is on shonenjump.com/gintama. I, like Necros, was more than disappointed with the first chapter, but I really feel there has to be something to this series, since it is popular in Japan. If I can enjoy a series like Bo-bobo enough to know why it's popular, Gintama has to have something to it as well.

That's not always the case. I still don't know why One Peice is popular.

Wow, someone else who has read Gintama... I have to agree, the humor is very Japanese.
The densha Otoko parody was kind of funny... but
I laughed so hard my side hurt durring the ring parody chapters... and the shinobi 5 vs go-ninja stuff was comedic gold--!!!!Curry Ninja!!!!.
