This is just silly. Fanart is the artist alley's main attraction. Fanart and fan doujinshis are often what keeps some series' popularity afloat long after the series have ended. I can't believe they did something so stupid. :\ (I can't think of a more polite way to describe such a decision)

This really is Bull$#!+. Fan art is fan art, and should be protected but a fan-organization like Otakon. The various anime companies that work with Otakon should demand that they reverse this policy change in support of the fans that, in turn, support them.

Maybe they were forced into it. If it's any indication, FUNi has become doubly protecive (if not assholish) of property rights since it's inception into Navarre. Hell, even with legally acquired items (remember the Akadot situation last year?). There may be other reasons as well...

I'm a bit mixed in my feelings on this... on one hand, as said before, part of the joy of going to the Artist Alley at a con is getting nice fanart.
on the other hand, I do like seeing copyrights being protected... however, I think a happy medium could be reached, where copyrights could be protected AND fanart could still be sold if they tried. they could work out a deal with at least one domestic distributor that would allow artists, for a small "licinging fee", to sell fanart for a series they hold the domestic rights to or something. there usually IS a way to meet at the middle ground. |

Though I don't go to Otakon, I am a little disturbed by this. I mean I can understand copyright protection, but Fan Art probably has very little if no impact at all financially on companies.
Whats next? Will Cosplay be banned because of people dressing up as copyrighted characters? |

I'm not sure how many more times I can say this, but what was posted to the forum was NOT the final, official policy.
I'm dismayed and disappointed at the rampant and wild overreaction to this. And I'm further disappointed that ANN didn't bother to check with the source, when they know quite well that I respond to my email. All this is doing is fanning flames. |

Corporate companies shouldn't be shunning away the fan art market. They're (the artists) not taking a large percentage of sales in the anime market. If a customer wants an image in which the company is in no position to provide (IE: A female version of Naruto with Iruka), they should be able to get it from another source at their own cost. Now if the company is able to provide artwork of a specific genre with the characters from the existing series, than other artists shouldn't profit from it. However, that isn't the case. Even if Otakon declines artists to do this practice, people will do this kind of exchange online. In the end, they just lose money from fees from those particular artists. Considering that Otakon does have an attendence cap, I wouldn't be surprised that this is to make the convention for a limited audience.

Uh, I think it has something to do with American artists rampantly making a profit off of copyrighted characters that do not belong to them.
Say like I'm Kouta Hirano's lawyer and I walk through the artist alley and someone has drawn Alucard and they're selling it for $5. What do I do? Pat them on the head? No, I tell them to stop with a cease and desist. If they were giving it away or posting it on the internet for free, different story, perhaps - but copyright law is copyright law. Everything stops being "oh it's for the fans and the fan community" the very second you take $5 in exchange for your unauthorized drawing of another person's copyrighted work. Might sound like a hardline stance to take, but it isn't very easy to logically argue against. |

You're being quite anal yourself. That said, cosplay and selling fanart are two different things. Cosplay is literally free advertising. |
