I'm glad to see that the Japanese police are focusing their time and money on getting the worst criminals out there.

We could put all our effort into getting the "worst" criminals, but that'd mean leaving the second-worst criminals entirely unmolested, and that would not be ideal.
The point is twofold, I guess:
+ crimes that are not the worst crimes still have negative impact, and
+ law enforcement gets diminishing returns on effort.
... and the two put together means that to minimise the total negative social impact a laserlike focus on "Worst Crimes" will be suboptimal. Increasing your Worst Crime Squad from seven to eight, say, might eliminate one Worst Crime a year, but using that cop to increase the Fourth-Worst Crime Squad from two to three might reduce the number of Fourth-Worst Crimes from two hundred to one hundred... and if Fourth-Worst Crimes are only a twentieth as bad as Proper Worst Crimes then... pretty straightforward maths, say.
... counterfeiting has a real social cost, same as murder does. It's nowhere near as big as murder, but an ant being smaller than an elephant doesn't make ants massless.

Man this is the 3rd time I'm hearing about group AKB48. I just watched a vid they did for the upcoming movie "Wreck It Ralph". Idol pillows huh? Id didn't know the group was that popular.

This mean we shouldn't prosecute rape cases if there are unsolved murder cases because hey, at least the victim is still alive and there are worse crimes out there?

Selling body pillows is not something you can compare to raping people

It is a lesser crime than murder and you say only the worst criminals should receive attention from police.
But lets take it down from rape. If there is an armed robbery but nobody is injured, is that one of the lesser crimes that should go ignored if there are crimes where people are injured or killed that still need solving?
I think your argument that only the worst of the worst crimes and criminals deserve police attention is a flawed one that falls apart under even the slightest scrutiny.

@Mr. sickVisionz: I agree. a lesser crime is a crime nonetheless. And this story is basically about a bootlegging operation, which I thought people would have been universally against. Perhaps the anime fandom's culture of disrespecting copyright is starting to make allowances for more egregious copyright offenses --- a disheartening slippery slope, I guess.

We've all thought of cashing in on the counterfeit Japanese body pillow market at one time or another, but think of the real victims!

This is really no different from Comiket, which is one giant convention aimed at making money based on creating art of others peoples property without permission. Yet cops don't go after that because it doesn't matter in the large scope of things... just like some dude selling body pillows with girls on them without getting their permission. They likely only bothered here because the company behind AKB48 complained to them.

Well, Comiket is somewhat different --- I've the sense that part of the reason why the anime/manga/games industry is less critical of fan dojinshi is that they're creative productions that give an original take on an existing property. If the dojinshi authors were simply taking images made by the original artists and printing them on pillows for sale, I'd think there'd be a lot less "looking the other way" in regards to the convention. Not to mention, those major publishers do on occasion warn dojinshi artists (Gundam and Pokemon come to mind), so it's not as though publishers aren't willing to enforce their copyrights in regards to dojinshi.

@Chrno2 -- Are you kidding me? They're like a female group version of Justin Beiber: SUPER popular, talked about (or being played) every damn time you turn on the TV/radio, and people either really love or really hate them as a result. (Their actual talent, much like Beiber, is debated as well.)

Well, I guess I would be kidding you because I hadn't heard of them until that movie ICE came out where one of the vocalist was debuting as cast member. While I do listen and purchase j-pop albums from time to time based on some well known groups, I'm not what you'd call an "avid" follower. Right now I'm hearing them mentioned like an odd coincidence. But nope never heard of them until the "ICE" project. Although I wouldn't compare them to Justin Bieber. Sadly I DO know him.
