"Miku now first virtual singer to ever top video charts."
Were there ever other candidates for such a feat? The only other virtual singers around are the other Vocaloids.

True, but not all vocaloids were created by Crypton Future Media, co-producer of these, and though Miku tops the bill, the other's are in the videos as well. It's just that regardless what company created what voice bank, in total count of all vocaloid songs made by every artist that used the software for whatever genre they produce, Miku's voice bank is used the most. Therefore it's natural selection.

That's a little unrealistic to ask. But I wouldn't be surprise (ok, I will totally be surprised) if Miku will sing the Japanese Anthem in the opening ceremony for the next olympic games that will be held in Japan.
But hey, a year ago I never imagined two companies (three if we include Toyota) will use Miku as their representative in their TV commercials.

Might not happen for Japan as a whole, but I could see it happening for the city of Sapporo, Hokkaido.

I did a bit of quick math: Revenue raised from combined sales of merchandise, tickets and DVD/BD sales to date tops at well over $6 million for the March 8/9 event alone. Yep I'd say all is well and good in the virtual pop star business
