Parents of a girl in Orange County, Fla., were shocked to discover that a comic book featuring adult-themed topics, like swinging and drugged and raped girls, was checked out by the 11-year-old at a library, according to a Local 6 News report. The controversial Japanese comic book is part of a series that can be found in the young adult collection at the Orange County Library's Southeast Branch. Local 6 News reported that the comic titled "Peach Girl" is about a young girl drugged by her friends and then set up to be raped. |

... oh... my... god. Peach Girl, from what I have read, is not just based on drugs, violence, and sex. Sure, it may have it in there, but doesn't just plain ol' TV? Oh, and there are plenty of regular books in the library that have worse than that. So, why is this such a big deal? Place a "13+" sticker or something on it. It's not like you never saw this on Dawson's Creek.
Wait, better yet, it already has a rating on the back of the book. If these parents are so paranoid about it, they should have looked through it before their kid did. |

Well, now those morons will base all anime and manga on that one book and start some ill-fated campaign to ban anime in the US.
And why the hell was an 11-year-old girl allowed to check out a young adult book? If anyone should get in trouble, it's the dumbass library for allowing this to happen. Also, from what I understand, Peach Girl was created for a Tokyopop contest and is not a Japanese creation, so that loser family can go to Japan and sue all they want, they'll never find the people who wrote the manga. |

"Controversial" just means idiotic politicians and soccer moms don't like it. And why the heck is the kid in the adult section anyway? Well, it's not like the kid isn't ever going to see this in real life, it really isn't that bad, jeez... |

I think it's the parents fault. They don't supervise what she's getting out of the library, then they get mad when she gets something they don't like. |

I'd say the story is that the library doesn't supervise their Young Adult section. You'd have the same story if the kid had been reading Lolita or Howard's End.

When i was 11 i checked out series like chobits and ayashi no ceres from the library! (even with the "older teens" rating) there isn't really a restriction in borrowing these type of things, i mean adult books don't all contain "adult" material and are checked out to kids it should be more of the kid's fault, but i don't think is should be problem as long as these acts are shown in a negative way (imo) |

haha, true, but they also had peach girl, x/1999, ranma 1/2, inuyasha, the excel saga anime, the hellsing anime, the trigun anime, and all these other teen series i'm not sure with all the desicions at my library because they would have a lot of random volumes and genres, i'm assuming they might be buying from what people request the library to purchase.. |

it also reminds me of the anime at rental stores...
for anime in particular there are sometimes no rating and all anime (in blockbuster) are rated "Youth Restricted" even if some i know to have to objective material. The thing with my mother she checks out the cover of what i want to rent (not much anymore since i'm older) and she was more hesistant of the slayers movie because of Naga's big boobs, but not angel sanctuary OAV which actually does have implied sex. Lots of animes/mangas look misleading on their outside.. |

the same thing happened with that one guy caught with so much child porn and hentai that he got sentenced to 1100+ years in jail. that guy was sick, but this just adds fuel to the fire. and...
that makes it worse. now we can add the politicians and soccer moms to the list of "enemies of anime" list. and everyone knows what happens when you get soccer moms angry: they join forces with the zealous christians and all hell breaks loose. then the politicians join in. all in one gigantic media fueled anti-anime frenzy. the same thing happened with heavy metal in the 80s and video games such as mortal kombat. all the parents care about is protecting their little jonny/suzie/WHOEVER!!! from modern society. now all we need is some maniac going on a killing spree or a little kid shooting up a school saying that they got the idea from watching gundam or cowboy bebop or something(knock on wood). |

Books at libraries have never been regulated, at least not that I've ever seen. Anyone can check out anything. I was reading books by V.C. Andrews which definitely has rape and incest and abuse and all the fun stuff when I was around middle school age.

I'd say that the source is definitely Japanese, especially since there was a 25-episode anime series based on it; it's not like they would animate a series from American source material, right? |
