There isn't much nudity, but the story is excellent and the overall effect is fairly emotional, including the ending. The worst part of all is that most of us will probably just watch the series and then forget that this sort of thing is still happening right now, in our era, with the tacit consent our complete lack of action provides.
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

There was two reviews on this site, both here and here of the series, plus has some users takes on the series in the here, just don't post there becasue that topic is old, but great if you want others option.

The links Ataru provides (especially for the reviews) are excellent ones for giving you a sense of what it's all about.
The short version: NTHT is one of the best-written and most powerfully emotional anime ever made. Well worth the purchase price, especially since the whole series can now be picked up for the same price as a new single volume. There's nothing in it that can truly considered fan service (one of the two brief scenes of nudity is left indistinct, and you'll fully appreciate that doing so was the right decision when you see the scene and consider what it means), and there's nothing much graphic about it, but it does have some very intense and disturbing content. This is not a series for younger viewers.

Hm...I have to say, even though I loved Now and Then, I can't help but think it just got a bit heavy-handed with the "look at us, we're being dark!" moments. Yes, it's meant to be a tragic, unforgiving story, but some of it just seemed like they were trying too hard to be cruel just for the sake of being cruel and to pander to the massive sect of anime fandom that works on the misguided notion that "darkness = quality" regardless of context or execution. It got to the point with me, that I just stopped caring about the characters at times because it seemed the show had devolved to just poking them with a big cosmic stick purely to see them squirm as opposed to actually advancing their character arcs and the plot as a whole.
Great series? Yes. Goes a bit too far and ends up shooting itself in the foot by being unreasonably, gratuitously "dark" and a bit cheap & cheesy in the execution of such? I'd also say yes, personally.

Definitely one of the greatest animes I've seen, for all the reasons mentioned above and more, such as the music, the setting 'a la' Heavy Metal the motion picture (that I do love a lot personnally...), the character designs or the New Wave era feeling of the Science-Fiction from the 60s
Like Key says, it's not a series for younger audience: be prepared to see some very dark things which are not gratuitous at all because, to agree with daxomni, some of them still happen every day on our world despite the fact we don't live in a 'post-apocalyptic' era... Take a trip into the most desolate areas of Africa if you don't believe me: some friends of mine did so, and they told me unbelievably horrible things when they came back
But I digress. I could go on pages and pages and pages... To make it short, watch this series: it's definitely worth the money and the time...
