You know what word I'm talking about, starts with an "F" and ends with a "K". ADV seems to use it a lot in their anime, and I've seen it be used in some fansubs. I'm just wondering if there is a Japanese equivalent to it, or if they just use it to emphasize their points. I've heard that there isn't a Japanese equivalent to it and I want to make sure.

Edit: I can't believe I only just now noticed that I said "work" instead of "word" in the title of this topic. Fixed.

It would surprise me, every language has its own swear words. For example, if I'd say fudge in dutch, the equivalent word would actually be "Klote", "sack of balls" in translation. If the Japanese would literally say fudge, they'd use the english word for sure.

Not to mention, fudge is such a weird swear word, I don't really get why people use it, it means literally nothing, and is barely offensive.

Because the word is close to the word F***. It's also a type of food so it's not really a swear(in America). It's just being said to get stress off without getting in trouble of using the actual word f***,when you're at a young age and in front of adults. It's also kind of like saying crap to replace s***.

Or saying "Crud" to replace "Crap".

I'm curious. What is today's connotation of the f-word? I always thought it was just slang for intercourse, but if you get "f-ed over," what does that mean, exactly? Is it like saying you were sexually assaulted (in a metaphorical sense), thus the vulgar and insulting nature of saying "f you?"

I don't know, I'm not big on cursing (unless I'm extremely angry), but I find it humorous when some people do (like Chris Rock).

I was actually talking about "fu*k", but the filtering system of this board kept replacing it with "fudge".

What I was saying, is that I don't understand why people say "Fu*k". Have you ever heard anyone say "Intercourse you!!!"? It sounds as silly as it is.

I think its more from the german 'fricken' meaning something like 'to strike'

so if I 'F you over' I 'strike you over' and in most cultures striking someone was considered an affront.

(I'm not going to say every culture looks down upon striking as I can be wrong)

to get F~ed over is to have something bad or unfortunate happening to you, like seeing your fiancee leave you for your best friend, or having some online purchase/business deal go very badly.

As far as I can tell, there's no direct Japanese equivalent--I guess sometimes ADV adds it for effect with certain characters, like Bandoh from Elfen Lied and Excel from Excel Saga. In the case of Elfen Lied, I've heard the same phrase (which ADV translates as "I'll F~ing" kill you!" used by characters in other shows without F~ being shown in translation. The phrase is 打っ殺す [bukkorosu], which means "beat to death," according to JWPCE. It's used all the time and TLed as other colorful synonyms for killing, like "slaughter." Ayaka from Negima uses it in episode 15, though she softens it as 打っ殺しますわよ [bukkoroshimasu wa yo] (if you know Japanese, you know how this is softer/feminine), TLed as "I'll definitely kill you!" Of course, this isn't offical translation, but anyone who's seen Negima knows that Funimation is not going to put F~ in her dialogue.

Oh sorry then didn't know the filtering system change fu*k to fudge.

As to the why people use it...well if you don't get it now well you probably won't ever get it(no offense) but I'll try and explain it for you and let's see if it's understood. It's just something that's used in a situation for stress or even sometimes joking around. Now lets go with the "F*ck you". Well, in a situation when you say that someone has normally spoken to you first. Let say someone has told me I look like a female dog(b*tch) and I say "F*ck you". Well like you say intercourse(sex)=F*ck. What is sex used for beside reproducing? Stress releaving would be another usage.
So basically, someone is upset with me and I'm telling them they need to get rid of some stress and have some sex that they aren't getting...simple put without having to tell someone all that I say "F*ck you", why people get upset with me telling them they need to releave some stress? Because noone likes being told they can't or aren't getting any sex.
But there is always different situations and I can't explain every situation but this is just a basic explaination I can come up with ATM.

P.s. geeezz this has gone off-topic.

Somewhat off topic, but somewhat on topic, there's an awesome MP3 floating around, I beleive it's a Monty Python recording, that details all the uses of the F word, and talks a bit about its German origin.

This is going to be a bit messed because of the word censors...

Quote:
Perhaps one of the most interesting words in the English language today is the word fudge. Out of all of the words in the English language that begin with the letter F, "fudge" is the only word referred to as the "F-word". It's the one and only true magic word.

Just by its sound can describe pain, pleasure, hate and love. fudge, as most words in the English language is derived from German, the word ficken , which means to strike.

In English, fudge falls into many grammatical categories: as a transitive verb," John fucked Shirley", as an intransitive verb, "Shirley fucks." its meaning is not only sexual, it can be used as an adjective such as "John isn't doing any [expletive] work." As part of an adverb, "Shirley talks too [expletive] much", as adverb enhancing an adjective, "Shirley is [expletive] beautiful", as a noun," I don't give a fudge", as part of a word "abso-[expletive]-lutely" or " in-[expletive]-credible" and as almost every word of a sentence," fudge the [expletive] fuckers". But you must realize there aren't too many words with the versatility of the word fudge. As in these examples describing situations such as fraud," I got fucked at the used car lot", dismay, "fudge this shit", trouble, "i guess im really fucked now", aggression, "don't fudge with me buddy", difficulty," i don't understand this [expletive] question", inquiry "who the fudge was that", dissatisfaction" I don't like what the fudge is going on here," incompetence, "he's a fudge-off", dismissal, "why don't you go outside and play hide and go fudge yourself". I'm sure you can think of many more examples.

With all of these multi purpose applications why can anyone be offended by its use? Use this word more often. It will identify the quality of your character immediately. No word can quite capture the severity of any given situation as the word fudge". Say it loudly! Say it proudly! fudge You!

There's an urban myth going around that the word is an acronym for or unlawful carnal consent" or "forniction under king's consent." This is just a myth though.

The true origin of the word is not certain. The first known use of the word in English dates back to 1503 in a poem by William Dunbar. It's widely assumed that it came from a germanic language, but not necesarilly German. In addition to the German "ficken" there are also words in Middle Dutch, Swedish and Norwegian similar to fudge, all of which have very similar meanings (to have sex).

I haven't read it, but Wikipedia's Entry on the word (you may need to fix the link!), appears to have a lot more imformation.

(Edit: I just read some oof the Wikipedia entry and it says that there are records of it being used in poems prior to 1500 and it meant then what it means today.)

Lol, I've actually heard that mp3 before. The one I saw was actually part of a flash animation, I'm not sure if that's where it originally came from though. So, I guess there isn't a Japanese equivalent to F**k.

Okay, before i post this realise i dont support dubs and pretty much hate them. But when ADV adds swears they usually enhance the script. When fansubbers do it they just want to look cool. A sub is supposed to be a direct translation of the japanese text, where as a dub is not. Adding unnecessery swearing to a fansub is stupid. But then again ADV is stupid too with their terrible dubs and maybe they could lighten down on the swearing too. Anime fans dont watch anime for swearing, sex and violence after all (Its part of the reason but not the whole reason. lol.)

There are quite a few fans who actually do watch anime for solely that reason. But who cares, if they like it then let them enjoy it.

Theres also a flash animation as mentioned by PantsGloblin, It's on funnyjunk.com and it made me laugh really hard.

Also, the word Fu*k doesn't have any real meaning, it's just a word that is meant to be taken offencivly.
