Anyone got a spare minute to come up with (post here) a definition for japanese idols ?

It relates to the news article I'm about to post. The opening paragraph explains that "Angel Lemon Project" is an anime about idols, but it occurs to me that not all of ANN's readers knwo what an idol is.

<sigh>

No one offered to help.

Oh well, here goes a first draft:

Idol: Japanese phenomenon for pop-stars (generally in their teens or early 20s) who have a phenomenally ardent, yet relatively small following. Idols are often manufactured pop-stars, and rarely have any permanency. As many as 50 or more idols can appear in Japan in one year, and most of them will disappear completely from the public eye within a year. Some Idols however break out into the mainstream and have longer lasting careers, Hikaru Utada is the best example of a former idol making it "big."

The idol phenomenon is mostly but not exclusively female. Most idols are singers or singers/actresses, however models, particularly swimsuit models, are also popular idols.

Ardent fans of Idols have become a distinct type of Japanese Otaku.

Idol groups have also become fairly successful as factories that churn out idol after idol. The best known idol group is Morning Musume, which appeared out of a "American Idol" type competition in 1997. Starting off with five members, each year one or more members "retires" from the group (either to drop out of the idol industry or to go solo) and auditions are held to replace the retiree. Over the years Morning Musume has put out several hit songs and albums, has grown to many more than 5 members and has had several spin-off groups. The youngest member of Morning Musume was 13 when she joined.

Hello Project (the organization that created Morning Musume and many other idols) official website is here

Ah, Morning Musume. How nostalgic.

Well, I've never been an idol chaser, and those few I do know (due to their popularity) I'm afraid to mention (read: spoiler[Saaya Irie]).

I've become an ero-oyaji (エロオヤジ, "dirty old man") now.

Ehhhh... there's nothing wrong with a little dirty-old-man-ness... but Saaya Irie does nothing for me. Very little depth of personality, and that's an instant turn-off for me.

Now, Itou Misaki - she is one of the most beautiful women alive.

Me and my friends found it hard to believe that "they" are natural. Poor little girl.
