Project ako was an anime from 1986 which had a Rumiko Takahashi design but I noticed that Ako with red hair looked like Lum.I always thought Ako was a parody of like Lum because her facial features look alot like hers. She reminds me of Lum with red hair.

No, I've never thought that, but even more disagreeable is this review I found of Project A-Ko. http://www.nihonreview.com/anime/project-a-ko-2/
Not only did I rate Project A-Ko a masterpiece but it still stands as my most favorite non-Ghibli anime movie ever. As for who A-Ko looks like, I've always thought she resembled a different Rumiko Takahashi charater: Girl-type Ranma. |

I thought that myself, although from looking at her facial features she kind of looks like Kei from Dirty Pair. A-ko Kei |

We can add to this confusion even more by including several other similar characters. Here's Takahashi's actual character named Maris from the Rumic World OVA anthology, The Choujo:
And Kenichi Sonada's design for Miki Morita from the one-shot womens' wrestling/sci-fi horror OVA Wanna-Be's: Seems like the Kei design was en vogue. Dirty Pair premiered July 1985, and the rest of these are from 1986. December 25 for Wanna-Be's, June 5 for Maris, and June 21 for Project A-ko. The interesting thing to note is that Dirty Pair itself got started from the idea of the two gals being a womens' pro-wres duo, and that's exactly what Wanna-Be's is, except more terrestrial and less confident than the Lovely Angels. I don't think TV Lum looks remotely like A-ko, perhaps the movie and later OVA incarnations do, but I can see why others who casually glance at the 80s might. There's a large shared design aesthetic running throughout that decade thanks to works like Macross and Urusei Yatsura, so you get a ton of similar looking characters and robots. |

Ako kind of reminds of Akane from Ranma as in facial features instead of girl type ranma but I said Lum because I guess artstyle was alike. Her and Akane have that same alike eyes.
Madoka Ayukawa from Kimagure Orange Road probably looks more like Lum than Ako does which Kimagure Orange Road is probably one the best anime of the 80's behind Maison Ikkoku ,She probably seems like Kyoko Otonashi because of the hair but Madoka has the look like Lum. |

All three shows, Urusaei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, and Kimagure Orange Road share the same character designer, Akemi Takada, so the resemblances do make a bit of sense here. |

Kei from Dirty Pair was based off of Ryunosuke Fujinami from Urusei Yatsura who also girl type ranma was modeled after so maybe thats why A-ko may resemble both.
Rumiko Takahashi created ryunosuke who if you notice looks alot like Sakura from Urusei Yatsura and her father cherry resembles ryunosuke father just smaller with a larger head but same facial looks.Even Takahashi has modeled in her own series characters after one in the same series. |

Not to mention, some of UY's animation and episode directors worked on Project A-Ko 1, which's why the movie shares a similarly silly sense of pacing. spoiler[(In the street battle scene, where C-ko and B-ko's minions catch up in their helicopter, and B-ko in the background starts spastically flinging secret messages in semaphore, that's a signature Oshii-era UY-animator move if ever there was one...It's unmistakable.)] The "Special Edition" A-ko DVD mentioned most of the connections in the commentary. A-Ko 1 is probably about as close a DNA match to classic UY as it's possible to get, Sgt. Frog and Ranma 1/2 included. |

Whomever did that review needs to watch it again.
It's a fun movie with loads of action, a good soundtrack, and good characters. Big deal it's over 20 years old, it still holds up pretty well IMO. Plus the recent re-release looks great. Now I will agree that the sequels were not very good. |

Doesn't Ukyo from Ranma resemble Madoka Ayukawa,I just researched and the voice actress for Madoka from Kimagure Orange Road is the same as Uyko Hiromi Tsuru and I think they both look alike or maybe Kasumi from Ranma reminds me of Madoka.

Although there was the studio/animator connection in-joke with C-ko going to see the KOR Movie, in A-ko 3. (And running into Lil' Lum & Ran on the way out.) Not sure whether the Harmageddon parody in the first movie was a specifically crew-related in-gag; that one just had it coming. |
