I'm tending to doubt that any of their titles are self-published. They'll likely stick with h-manga, instead.

Well, if they think they can sell porn on the internet, then I wish them luck. I do think it's funny that they're selling a 680 yen magazine for $16 (plus shipping) though. That's a pretty nice markup.

If you mean fan works, then not a chance. Most doujiinshi of that type are classified as unauthorized derivative works that run afoul of international copyright and trademark laws. They are able to get away with it in Japan because of loopholes w.r.t. parodies, the low volume of sales, and some IP holders not caring. That doesn't change its status in the eyes of the law and "parody" is much more strictly defined outside of Japan. In fact, some Japanese publishers are currently working on trying to change laws to make it easier to go after these doujinshi artists.

You realize there's a metric ton of doujinshi that's not derivative ?

How do you go about licensing and publishing independent works though? Seems like you'd have to get in contact directly with the artist instead of a major publisher who would be the actual rights owner were it a normal manga. There are a ton of nice long sets of original doujinshi that would be nice to see licensed, like Arsenothelus' Twin-Dungeon Princess story. For derivative works, those will always remain purely in the legal grey area for how they're initially sold and who scanlates them.

So...... what's wrong with "get in contact directly with the artist?"

Is there any set precedent for it? The most I know about westerns talking to doujin artists is through pixiv, twitter, or e-mail, but that's usually on the fan level.

You know, that would be a neat idea for a company, someone who localized doujins, that is to say general japaense indie comics. I mean that is what the term really means right? And thankfully not ALL Doujins are hentai.

Yep, probably would'nt last long, but would be neat to see somebody bring over NON-PORNOGRAPHIC Indie comics from Japan.

Back on topic however. While I respect others rights to enjoy hentai, I myself find it to be the most appauling thing ever. Not soley becasue of the pornogprahy, however. I realize that our desire for sex like violence is part of human nature, but mearly the fact they are taking such wonderful mediums like comics &/or animation and using it for smut. I mean you already have the live action stuff, no need to drag something as amazing and beautiful as Animation &/or comics into such a base form of entertainment.

But I digress. Carry on gentlemen.

Animation/comics are merely another medium to express a story in. There's nothing "pure" about them that makes them above expressing the most base desires of humanity.

And I really have no interest in Live-Action porn. Then again, I have basically no interest in Hentai either. Whatever floats your boat, I say.

I am aware, but I still thought it relevant to throw in that caveat if he/she meant fan works.

@Soundmonkey44: I don't think the costs for translating a manga are all that high and I highly doubt that licensing costs are going to be very high(you could almost certainly just use a single fill-in-the-blanks contract for most of them and I don't think most doujin artists are going to be asking for a minimum guarantee). Of course, it'd probably be best to attach such a business to a company handling mainstream fare.

Unfortunately they are also lumping everything with (straight) fanservice but non-hentai under the hentai label like My Cute Crossdresser, or a couple other books sold through the store as well.

Anyways, wrt doujin, they have a category for it on their site:
http://www.projectecchi.com/search?genreid=3&text=Genre:+Doujin
though the 3 titles, which include a Masamune Shirow artbook don't appear to be actual doujinshi. Also J-List licensed and translated and uncensored bleach ero doujin before.

But dlsite and dmm have english versions of their sites where people outside of Japan can buy virtual doujinshi directly, mostly VNs and mostly untranslated

No need? Animation is probably the superior choice for porn, since one, no real people are harmed or "degraded" in making it, and two, you can design any character you want, however you want, in any situation you want regardless of budget, physics, or any other limitations. Animation gives you complete and absolute control over the entire project. Not to mention it's the difference between child pornography and loli doujins/movies. Hentai manga/anime let you do things far removed from the confines of reality. Not to mention even hentai/doujinhi actually have plots/character development, unlike your typical porn website clips and such like any other anime.. for all intents and purposes, it's just another manga/anime, only with more of a focus on sex.

Plus, if you want porn of of an established character, you kind of need drawn stuff, unless you want one of those laughable live-action parodies Numerous circles have already announced their plans for new Pokemon doujinshi at the next Comiket for the new female protagonist and Gym Leaders of Black and White 2, for example. It's a big industry in Japan, enough to the point you even have a day dedicated to it in Comiket. They take notice and appreciate the talent there, and mangaka out there consider it an honor if their work get big enough for people to draw that stuff of. Not to mention a good number of big name mangaka got their start drawing doujinshi.
