Man, seeing Zabuza and Haku again felt so good. Their arc is still one of the best in the series.
I'm not that big a Naruto fan. In fact I stopped following it shortly after the Chuunin arc ended and only picked it up again after Tobi revealed his big scheme. However I'm currently digging the Ninja War arc. I thought Gaara's speech was great and Naruto himself has been doing some cool things in the most recent chapters.

wow you're telling me ... bad thing is it only gets worse in later volumes/chapters.
-The Legendary Seven Swordsmen? Setup to be a potentially great storyline in this volume but in the end they're all defeated off screen! What?
- Kinkaku and Ginkaku in the next volume really defines the Negative aspect from this volume.
-Then you have the "minor" fights where it seemed like Kishimoto was told to include to the other members of the "Rookie 9" in some sort of the fights and it comes off as a mess which really does make the fights hard to care about and forget about them being memorable (Chunin exam fights? Memorable. Sasuke Retrieval fights? Memorable ... heck even some of the early fights in Shippuden have been memorable. In this War, unless I think really hard, the only thing memorable has been what Naruto has been doing)
-If the current Kage fight ends with an off screen result I think I'm going to pull my hair out. That looks like it'd be a epic fight when he set it up but has yet to go back to it .......
The Zombie-ninja idea probably sounded good during planning but the result has been extremely weak. And the idea in general just seems lazy, "I'll throw in a few new guys for the war but 95% of them will be people I've used before so that I won't have to come up with a whole lot of new material"

I've read the chapters of this volume in English Shonen Jump, and it was awesome. Sure some parts of the fights were a bit confusing, but the team battles were something that we haven't really seen in Naruto. This part of the storyline certainly isn't dull.
The re-emergence of the old foes does lead to some emotion, but there are many new villains showing up next volume anyway.

How is he reviewing volume 55 if it will not be released until March 6?
Quote: | duller. The major fights in this volume are all chaotic team efforts starring barely memorable third-string characters, some of whom are ninja zombies that had been killed off ages ago. |
Really? Deidara, Sasori, Zabuza and Haku are "memorable third-string characters"? Even the never seen brother of Sai gets his moment because he is fighting Sai. And there are actually some flashbacks that added some things to them.
Quote: | The great ninja war shouldn't have turned out this way. It should have been about incredible heroes and incredible villains facing their toughest challenges ... |
You mean a boring fighting tournament? I thought it was supposed to be war with people joining their forces to survive.
Quote: | Not too long ago, the complaint about Naruto was that everyone was standing around making preparations for the great war. |
Really? There was such complain? I thought they actually showed some epic fights before such as Sasuke vs the Kages, Sasuke vs Danzo, Team 7's reunion, Madara vs Tobi, Guy vs Kisame as well as Naruto's birth.

Advance review copies are a wonderful invention. That's how. A lot of places will often get things in for sale early as well.

Contorted and confusing? Yes . Dull? No. Tedious? I guess that depends on how anyone views it. I wasn't too huge of a fan of the Kinkaku and Ginkaku sections of the War, but it was nice to see some of the Cloud Ninjas get some screen time. As a whole, the beginning of the War isn't that great with the exceptions of seeing Haku and Zabuza again. It isn't until Naruto and Killer Bee inevitably join the fray that the plot moves forward in some unexpected ways.
Ultimately, Naruto isn't what it use to be since pre-time skip and I think that's detracted from what made the series appealing for some (or a lot). Gone are the shifts of strong supporting characters and the focus of the series seems to be entirely on Naruto and Sasuke.

Took the words right out of my mouth. This right here has been my biggest complaint with Naruto of late. Since the time jump, it's just been going downhill fast, introducing new characters only to get rid of them quickly and not giving enough attention to characters that are already established. Not to mention I just haven't been enjoying the storyline even when established characters are involved, but that's a much more subjective reason.
It's such a shame as I really loved the first 27 books...

I rember when a friend told me about this at and I thought "oh great it sounds just like the Hades arc in Knights of The Zodiac." Seems like I wasn't that far off, although it seems a little cheap to bring Zabusa back.

Parsifal24,
They didn't bring back just Zabusa, but pretty much any ninja of any significance from the past. Personally, I don't have a problem with this. I think this is all leading up to some Big Picture changes that will likely bring the whole series to a close. IMO, it wont be until we see how it all turns out that we can properly evaluate what is going on now; if the ending is good, it will (should) validate what is happening, and if it is not any good, then that'll effect all the events that led up to it, including this Impure World Ressurection thing, will be unsatisfactory. YMMV.

you think that's bad itachi comes back as well, fights Naruto then uses some cheap jutsu to break free of kabato's control. I have no face nor will I ever have a face for that...

wow, surprised someone found this part of the arc as dull as I did. It will get better though since this is all just what needs to be done for some awesome fighting sequences of 1 on 1 action or maybe 2 on 1, etc etc. I'm looking forward to 56.

Very accurate review.
It's ironic that with so many zombies around the series itself turned into a living corpse.

I left it more or less at that point and no plot point I have been told by friends has made me interested again. Jiraya died? I am sad but not interested enough, Itachi was actually a good guy? ughh did that got retconed for popular vote? all out war in Konoha? Too litle too late.
