Looks like this will be the first Space Battleship Yamato work since 2010's SBY film to feature a gender-bendered version of a male character seen in the original continuity. Well, it never hurts to include more main female characters to take part in the crew of a voyaging battleship like the Yamato.
Also, I find it's cute that this new will include a woman with twin-tail hair, something that's lacked in the original Space Battleship Yamato, not I expect this anime to be more moe than space opera, but it never hurts to try new things for such a remake.

Who's the general who approved the designs of the female uniforms?

Except that Yamato 2199 maybe what the Space Battleship Yamato franchise needs to be able to win audiences of this generation, especially when it appears that its fanbase so far mostly consist of older generation anime fans. Sometimes, newbies don't enjoy the old school stuff until they first see their remakes/reboots first.
By the way, if you feel Yamato 2199 is not your cup of tea, you can always stick to buying the Star Blazers DVDs as well as the English sub Space Battleship Yamato movie DVDs from Voyager Entertainment.

Kind of reminds me of the Evangelion suits, especially Makoto Harada's, which looks like Mari's.
