Hi people.

I was having a chat with a good friend yesterday and it seem that we share the same opinion about how low is the quality of the anime that has been realeased this year in Japan.

From our point of view, there have been very few appealing animes this year (Air, Full Metal Panic the second raid) and lots of disapointments (Tsubasa reservoir chronicles, trinity blood).

The last year have a lot of interesting animes (Genshiken, Beck, Samurai Champloo, Full Metal Alchemist, Elfen Lied). I ve been watching anime since 1999 and this is the first year that i ve said... there is nothing interesting to look for (except for Advent Children and the Movie of Full Metal Alchemist).

Do you agree with us? Can 2005 get better than 2004 in the Octuber season?

Hm, did bleach start 04 or 05? o.O... I dont remember about that but....

So far I'm really loving Suzuka. Speed grapher is pretty damn good too... and I really liked Ichigo 100% (dunno why... just appealed to me haha).

But you're right. It's nothing that will be a classic or w/e... no, I dont think it will be better than 04.

I think the summer 2005 season is actually turning out pretty good. I mean, we've got good titles like Tsubasa Chronicles, Speed Grapher, Gundam SEED: Destiny (continuing it's run it started in Fall 2004), and FMP!: TSR. I'd say that that's a pretty good number of good titles for a season.

Last year was the disappointing season with Fafner and Midori being the only real two good titles I found airing last summer.

I've got my hopes on the anime adaptation of Black Cat, which starts October 6th in Japan. the animation quality, judging by the trailer, looks decent... so as long as they don't mangle the plot too much it should be good.

Hmm, I went through the list of recent anime and it's true that the remarkable ones are few and far between. Let's see...

Victorian Romance Emma (TV)
Honey and Clover (TV)
Eureka 7 (TV)
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (TV)

There were other interesting shows, but as far as eagerly waiting for each new episode every week... that's pretty much it. Indeed a weak year. But it's not over yet, we could still have some surprises in stock. Although nothing that could beat Eureka 7, I'm pretty sure of that. Even in a good year that one would have been a contender for best show. It's just... superb. At every level it does everything that a great anime should do. Masterful.

Of course there are still some talented people in the anime industry (otherwise we wouldn't have something like Eureka 7) but I think we are beginning to see the effect of the economic slump in Japan. With the inbetweening going to Korea and the animators being underpaid, the effect on the talent pool is beginning to show. I'm afraid we are going to witness a serious decline on the artistic level.

I'd say we are seeing it right now. Remember the Negima incident? 2X2=Shinobuden even made parodies for recent degeneration of animation quality (it's cursed! Laughing ):

Thanks to HHC for the screencap and translation.

I think that this lack of quality and originality in anime has slowly been approaching over the last few years, not just this year. And although my tastes differ from yours (Aka I hate Air) I agree that what's out there right now is pretty bland. However, right now I'm really enjoying what little of Kamichu! I can get my hands on. And I'm also enjoying Gakuen Alice, but I'm not sure if that started in 05 or 04.

And don't even get me started on the degrading quality of animation....

I don't really mind the art work, as long as a series appeals to me, I'll watch it. Heck, I even watch Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-san in front of my parents because it appeals to me Anime smile (the story is sooo cute! Oh... I adore cute things Wink ), and they'll go O_O

Animes that was made on the year 2005 that I've seen (seen some episodes too) so far are...

Air TV - You probably heard many things about this but I think this would be the #1 Bishoujo Game Anime of 2005
Mahoraba ~Heartful Days~ - this one has a heart warming story. I really enjoyed watching this.
Da Capo S.S. - Seems to be a good one... but I don't think it would be better than the 1st Series.
Ichigo 100% - Not that I dislike this one, but it make me feel like I'm watching someone play a date simulation game and the person playing it was a $u<ker.
Ah! Megami-sama TV - Good, but I never enjoyed it like I enjoyed the OAV.
Izumo: Takeki Ken no Hirameki - another bishoujo game anime, but IMHO, I don't think it's that good. Though I think the game was great Anime smile

2005 hasn't been a complete disappointment to me. I've found some appealing series to me though that doesn't mean they're good to you. Recently i've come to adore Honey & Clover, Air TV, FMP TSR and Suzuka. Though I don't really care much for animation as long as the story is told the way I like it to be told I can stomach horrible animation if only for the art and story. But from what i've heard I'll be needing to see Eureka 7.

I already like it better than the first season. The first season was all over the place, but this one seems delightfully focused.

No one mentioned Loveless. Man, that anime was really a left field surprise. I really liked it. Speaking of not mentioning, no one mentioned Kamichu!. That is definitely one of the best new shows this year.

I also highly enjoyed/I'm highly enjoying Emma, Mahoraba, Eyeshield 21, Air, FMP!TSR, Zettai Shonen, Ah! My Goddess, and of course, the best series of the year thus far, Honey and Clover. There's been enough new anime to keep me busy, so I think it's been a pretty solid year.

I'm really excited about Black Cat and Paradise Kiss, so this fall season should prove to be promising as well.

Yeah there have been some disappointments, Ichigo 100% truly made me depressed about anime in general, and Tsubasa Chronicles really didn't impress me much (except for some of the music). But I have found some good series, though then again I have weird tastes. Most have been mentioned, Speed Grapher, FMP:TSR, Honey and Clover, Air. Other ones that I have a personal interest in are Eyeshield 21 and Suzuka, but that's my preference.

There are also series continuing their run into 2005 that help the anime scene, series like Bleach and Gundam Seed: Destiny.

Personally I've only recently expanded my anime world past [AS] so all of this stuff seems pretty intriguing to me. Perhaps its a matter of personal taste, maybe you like a certain style or tone to an anime and the ones now don't really fit the bill. Don't know what to tell you, but there are some entertaining anime out there I do know that, I think 2005 has done allright.
