No, it's anime. It's an American anime and there's nothing wrong with that. |

Next time you make a thread, please have the title and the actual point of the thread correspond. Asking about Teen Titans in the title and then asking for people's individual definitions of anime inside the thread is highly misleading.
That depends on your definition of anime, though, which was actually the real point of marino's thread. Personally, I would say it isn't, because I define "anime" strictly as "animation whose core production originates in Japan." But you see things differently. It's all a matter of personal perspective, really. |

Regarding your definition Nagisa, Teen Titans isn't anime at all. The majority of the animation was done by Dong Woo Animation which is stationed in Korea. By the way the official site has some interesting information.

Well, in that same manner, a great deal of actual anime cannot be considered anime, either, as Japan also outsources a lot of lower-level 'tween & grunt work to other countries. What I mean by "core production" is to have such upper-tier roles as production studio, director, writer, various department directors & executives, and generally the people behind the core creation of the show to be primarily based in Japan, while the lower-tier grunt work could be done just about anywhere (and in most cases, is).

Conversely one could define anime as "animation in general", but I'll leave that one up one the individual to decide on their own. I personally are on a mission to put back all Teen Titan DVD's out of the Japanese anime sections in stores. The revolution is going strong. |

First, the topic title. Teen Titans is not anime. Teen Titans is an American cartoon based on an American comic book series that was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez in 1980.
Anime is animation created in Japan...or at least the core production. The character design, writing, and all of the major stuff is Japanese, but the animation itself can be created anywhere. Anime is not a certain style as there is no single style that all anime shows follow. |

I gotta go with the people who say it is NOT an anime. my definition of anime is animation where the main work originates in Japan. about the only animation I can think of that breaks the boundry of what can and can't be called anime is the animated Last Unicorn movie, since a lot of the work on it was done in Japan, and only the voicework, some of the music, and screenplay adaption (which was done by the author of the book) was done outside of Japan.

Uh, there are quite a few anime that are based on foreign works, although I can't for the life of me think of the names of any of them. |

Personally I don't think something can be considered anime unless it comes from Japan. To me anime is Japanese animation.
Some people argue that anime is a style. This argument has many flaws. One of the main problems with this argument is that a lot of people who support it still consider anything from Japan anime. However animated productions from Japan vary widely in style. For example there are no similarities between Jin-Roh and Pokemon. Admittedly a lot of anime have characters with big eyes and funky hair but there are also a lot that don't. By the logic of that argument early American animation such as Popeye should also be considered anime. After all it was cartoons like that which originally inspired the big eyes and such that we see in anime today. And lets be honest it's the character designs in cartoons such as Teen Titans that lead people to class them as anime. I would actually be very interesting in hearing a response to the points I have brought up from someone who supports the argument that cartoons such as Teen Titans are anime. Howl's Moving Castle is one example. It is based on a British book. Nevertheless those involved in the core production for the animated movie were Japanese. I'm sure this applies to a lot of anime. While the original idea may have come from a non-Japanese source the actual anime will no doubt have been made by people from Japan. |
