Holy crap this is bad. But I wonder why are we hearing about this now?

I hope that all goes over well. Most that suffer strokes usually don't recover the same way. I've seen enough people in my life deal with this.

Best of wishes to a great anime pioneer.

Fred's a great guy and I sure hope he gets better and better.

For many of us he has been a steady source of information and an inspiration over the years. I felt honored (and amused) when he and I were introduced as the 'old guys of anime fandom' several years ago when we did a joint panel at Fanime.

I heard about this back when it first happened. It really is a shame; I remember attending his panel at AWA last year, and it was easily one of—if not the—highlight of the entire convention. The entire room was empty (save for people checking their merchandise, not really attending), save for myself, one other attendee, and Fred, so it was basically the three of us just rambling on about anime for an hour. It was a fantastic experience. I suppose there won't be a repeat of that this year, but his health does come first. I wish him the best.

I personally like to call Fred "The Dean of Anime Fandom". His promotion and writing about anime over the years has been a great asset to the growth of the medium in North America. I remember meeting Fred for the first time at Westercon 99. The wealth of information this man has in his head is astounding. I'm always disheartened to hear about his panels not having lots of people show up because they could learn so much from him. His lastest book "Watching Anime, Reading Manga" is probably the best book on the growth of anime fandom up to the mid/late-90's. I really hope Fred will be able to do sequel to that excellent book.

Get better Fred! I believe the anime community still has lots to learn from you.
