Why do anime movies score well (not per se including the currency value difference) in Japan but stink in the U.S.? Also, why are they often put in limited release? I had to buy Appleseed, but fortunate to see Howl's Moving Castle.

Anime movies that see theatrical releases do better in Japan because there's more of a market for them. Which in turn is the reason why the few anime movies that are done theatrically in the US are only limited releases, no company is willing to put up the money for a full scale release when there is no guarantee that the movie is going to make even a fraction of that money back

Nionel is right. Most anime movies that come out in america usually tend to have a large fanbase like yu-gi-oh and pokemon because they are advertised more with alot of their merchandise. But since other movies have less of a fanbase companies are less willing to pull the money together.

Also you can't release it everywhere in the US because the market isn't as big as normal movies and the audience isn't as big enough for it to be released anywhere.

One other factor could be advertising , I hardly ever see ads for animated movies.

Well, I consider that part of the problem with anime movies. If something like the Ghost in the Shell movies or the Fullmetal Alchemist movie would get the same sort of marketing that Pixar gives to its crappy films (okay, Toy Story 1 and 2 and Shreck were good, but Pixar's work is starting to wear a little thin) then they would at least make it into the Top 5 on their opening weekend. Even a worst case scenario like Final Fantasy: Spirits Within managed to get in the Top 10 on its opening weekend, and that stank like a skunk! If it had been a good movie it could have easily been Top 5.

You think Pixar movies are wearing thin? In my opinion Pixar hasn't made a bad movie yet, I would rate them as all 4 star at least. Shrek was made by DreamWorks not Pixar who have made some bad movies such as Shark Tale.
While more advertising would help to an extent I still don't think adult anime movies would make a lot of cash. The problem is there isn't a large market for adult anime films such a Ghost In The shell due to the perception in the west that animation is primarily for children.

Pixar wearing thin? They haven't made a bad film yet, all of their films are a critical and commercial success, even the sequels. I even read an article once where Pixar was going to be forced to make a crappy film, that would be shit but it's true.

I don't think anyone knows why anime movies do so bad here. If they did, then we wouldn't have this topic on the board. I don't think it's cultural, because movies made by other Asian countries like Crouching Tiger or Hero do ok over here, even subtitled. But even traditional American animated films do poorly here. Just look at the last few Disney films. They all bombed. The only money they make is off the computer animated Pixar films. What was the last traditional AMERICAN animated film that was a hit? I read somewhere that Disney is going over completely to CG. Maybe American audiences no longer care about traditional anime and want only the Toy Story/Shrek type animated films. I felt sure that Howl would make a dent in the American market but it bombed here. I don't understand why. I wonder if it had been done in CG in the Pixar style, whether it would have been a hit? For all its hype about being popularized, I still think that anime and manga fans are still truly an underground movement and the general populace just flirts around its edges. Someone wrote that the only way anime will break through is if Hollywood begins making live-action movies based on Japanese manga, like James Cameron's Battle Angel. That would be a good start.

I find Final Fantasy : The sprits whithin much more worthy of a title than regular, popular action movie theater releases that have lots of cool teh mega digitilized special effects with very bad character development and stupid plots with halywood's standards. FF isn't THAT bad if you compare it to every day's movies you see.

Matrix takes a lot of influence from anime, maybe thats why it was so success full.

Yes, but America doesn't care about character development and good plots. All they want is explosions and breasts.

One can only hope.

Successful. And here's the thing: as soon as an anime movie comes along, everyone thinks it's ripping off the latest live-action Jackie Chan movie because of the martial arts. I've seen ads for a lot of Hollywood movies that rip off anime, like Stealth, which is a complete ripoff of Yukikaze. Of course, if Yukikaze had a movie, everyone would think it's a Stealth ripoff, even though it came first. This is the sad state America is in when it comes to animation. If it's not Family Guy or The Simpsons, it's for kids. And if it's anime, it's violent and pornographic and should be banned. |
