I'm proud to say that I've bred my little sister into a voracious anime fan, she's been watching since she was 3. She's 11 now and getting in to manga and its obviously a bit harder to censor what she's reading. I bought her the 1st issue of Shojo Beat, which she really liked but when my mom took her to get the newest issue she discovered that it wasn't really what she should be reading. Right now she bought the first 2 volumes of Ceres: Celestial Legend which she seems to like and I just gave her the first two volumes of Shonen Jump (which she isn't too interested in "I' don't really like boy stuff") that I had stashed away. She loves Sailor moon and other magical girl things and probably any shojo. She reads these things in a day and we hit either the book store or comicbook store every week, so I'd greatly appreciate it if you guys could give us some recommendations on what she may like and is "'safe" for her to read. Thanks

Try Hot Gimmick
I myself don't care for it but I'm sure a girl would love to read it

If she likes mahou shojo, try some of the Clamp works for younger readers, like Cardcaptor Sakura or Magic Knight Rayearth.

If Shojo Beat was too much how would that work?
I recomend Kare Kano-
Quote:
Plot Summary: Yukino Miyazawa is really, really vain, and loves to hear people praise her. She's always been the best at everything, and always tries to look perfect. But when Yukino goes to high school, she's finally upstaged--by Souichiro Arima, who scores better on the entrance exams and instantly snatches the attention of the class. By accident, Arima finds out that Yukino is just pretending, and this starts off a series of events that lead to Yukino and Arima falling in love. They then have to cope with a lot of obstacles in their relationship.

Most people who read it really enjoy it and it is the one shojo manga on my shelf that I will finish.

I recently finished the first volumes of Ultra Maniac and Full Moon o Sagashite, and they were delightful. They're the best recommendations on the top of my head.

Pita-Ten might be worth checking out as well. Fruits Basket is a great series for anyone of any age. Just as Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&! are.

I also second the Cardcaptor Sakura and Magic Knight Rayearth recommendations.

She may like D*N*Angel, but that might be a stretch...

And Hot Gimmick wouldn't work, especially if Shojo Beat was too much...

Even though they're Shonen Jump titles, Hikaru no Go and The Prince of Tennis may be worth her checking out.

Keep her out of teen shoujo for now, like Hot Gimmick and Peach Girl. Those usually have a lot of sexual dialouge, so unless she's used to it...

Like people have said, give her a lot of Mahoshoujo for now. Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, Tokyo Mew Mew, and other more kid friendly titles:

Angelic Layer
Kodoncha *GET HER THIS*
DNAngel
CLAMP Campus Detectives
Fruits Basket
The Legend of Chung Hyan
Miracle Girls
Alice 19th

Definitely try to get her some Fullmoon wo Sagashite. It has pretty art and I guess you could say the story looks fluffy, but it also is really deep at times as well as funny. It's about a girl named Mitsuki, who wants to be a singer, but has throat cancer. Two shinigami help her reach her goal after letting slip that she only has one year to live. A few young girls also like Chobits, but god forbid I don't approve. I didn't like Ultra Maniac myself, but that's just my shonen-swayed taste. Anyway, good luck.

Yeah, I let my 12 year-old sister read Shojo Beat issue 1, but I should have realized that it was inappropriate for her when she had to ask me what the word "grope" (used in Crimson Hero) meant. She really liked the first chapter of Nana, but the Nana chapter in issue 2 has convinced me that she probably shouldn't be reading that either.

I'll warn you that Ceres is a tricky series. In vol. 7 or 8 (I forget which) characters have sex in a brief non-graphic scene, and in vol. 10 there is a non-graphic attempted rape. Incestuous themes also start popping up in the later volumes. I'd suggest flipping through the Ceres volumes at your bookstore (particularly the volumes I mentioned) to see whether or not your sister could handle this.

If your sister loves Sailor Moon, then she would definitely like the manga series Tokyo Mew-Mew, since it's basically the same thing. Instead of having a team of magical girls with powers from the planets however, Tokyo Mew-Mew has a team of magical girls themed after various animals. Mink is a cute and fluffy manga about a girl who transforms into a singing idol. It's not the best magical-girl manga out there, but it does feel a lot like Sailor Moon as well.

I'd recommend Marmalade Boy and Kodocha as "realistic" shoujo manga appropriate for ages 10 and up.

Yea I didn't read any of Shojo Beat until I filpped through the free preview a few days ago and realized she shouldn't be reading it. As for Ceres I had a feeling it would have some questionable content sooner or later so thanks for the heads up.

Thanks to everyone for all of you recommendations you've been a great help.

If you can't find used copies of the Kodocha manga, there's always the upcoming anime. I guess if you're looking for a Jump title which should theoretically cross over with girls, try Prince of Tennis. Also, that B.B. Explosion looks appropriate for her...

It's actually spelled Kodocha, but anywho, I completly second this title. It's a great title for girls coming of age, and an 11 year old would be able to completly relate with the lead character, Sana. Plus it's absolutley laugh out loud hilarious. ^_^

I'll second of those other titles as well, except for Miracle Girls (because it's a boring title), and Alice 19th has some sexual scenes in it, so you might want to wait a few years on that one.

Some other good titles I'll throw in: Saint Tail is a cute story about a young girl who acts as a robin hood-like figure, and steals back what's been stolen from people, and if she likes Sailor Moon, then give this one a try. Demon Diary is a good comedy that's geared towards girls. There's a tiny, tiny ,tiiiny bit of implied shounen-ai...but in all honestly, it will probably fly right over her head and isn't in any way sexual.

I would recommend Wish. It's pretty clean, and it's a good CLAMP storyline. Revolutionary Girl Utena also.

Hmmm what about Nana 7 of 7?

Opinion is strongly divided, but perhaps she's in the actual target age group, so it might work.

I'd recommend Instant Teen:Just Add Nuts, there's not really anything bad about it.And it's rated Youth 10+. I actually really enjoyed it, I thought it was both cute and funny. Anime smallmouth
Ohh, there's also Pretear, the manga doesnt have anything inappropriate in it.(except it may say pervert once or twice, but there is NO sexual content what so ever!) In the anime... there are alot of bad words. so that may not be something she should watch just yet.

Have her read Pretear. It's a great Magical girl series. I've seen the preview of the TV series and last time I went to but buy manga at Hastings (only place in town Crying or Very sad so sad) [anyway] I saw a little girl around eight or nine who was interested in Pretear. Either Pretear or Pretty Sammy [I Pretty Sammy's a manga if it's not buy the series, just don't mix it up with Magical Project if your a Tenchi fanatic] [/spoiler]
