Ok. Before I start I do want to say that I have checked the General Anime Questions post and it does not provide a genre. My problems is that I have a very hard to satisfy taste, and it is subject to change, as can be seen in my selection of music. Now, I live in the UK, and my first (real) introduction to Manga was a Tokyopop taster type book, that I picked up in a large bookstore simply because I recognised Anime and Manga as things that appealed to me, thanks to some research and me being a regular visitor to Deviant Art. I selected an anime that I found interesting (Hack.//Legend Of The Twilight) and purchased volume 1. I found it enjoyable though I did not feel like purchasing volume 2. My interest ebbed for a while untill I hit on a badly made 'What Anime Will You Like' selector purely by accident and, since I had nothing better to do, completed it. Neon Genesis Evangelion was suggested, and feeling in a mood to buy stuff purchased the first disk on eBay (its the UK, where the hell else was I going to get it?). I loved it and purchased the entire series (which I have yet to finsih viewing). I am now looking for other Manga/Anime that I may be interested in so am seeking help from you guys (heh, I looked around to forums and it seemed like you were speaking a different language). Things that appeal to me are: complex and slowly realised characters, good storyline, action, guns, character devlopment, progressive storyline. Genres that appeal to me are: (*deep breath*) Action, Drama, Sci-Fi (inculdes pretty much anything related to space), Mecha (ha ha, theres one word that I know what it means) and Comedy (not a particular fan of this area, but the occasional comic moment in a usually serious anime is no bad thing, right?). Please bear in mind, I am 15 (5 months off 16) year old male (who considers himself mature.. enough), and though attractive females would be a great thing to have in the anime, I do not want to get involved in anything as seriously.. uh.. whatever as Hentai. Well lets just say, if it shows sex: no (I'm also cosidering who may walk into my room while im watching), but if it shows a naked person for a few seconds or kissing/hugging, etc who gives a shit, K? Controlled romance, however, in my opinion adds something to a story, especially if adds to a characters personality or adds a little comedy. I am also heavily interested in computers, and spend a lot of my time on them (that does not make me a geek or whatever, I socialize as well Very Happy ), so that may be another thing to consider. Well.. let me just say that if you find an anime that addresses half of the apove then I would be very grateful to hear it. Anime similar to NGE also appreciated.

Oh.. and one last question, my Father is going to America next week, and since the extent of Manga and Anime in the UK is AI Loves You, Love Hina and Hack (well.. in Ottakars anyway) and everything else is eBay, I am giving him about $50 and a list of names for him to look out for and purchase, and I would like to know where you American citizens get your Manga/Anime, how much of it is readily availible in shops (heh heh, was about to say high street there) and how much it costs.

//Thanks for the help//

A video store. Evangelion is currently being released in the UK for the third time to my count (VHSs, then DVDs, now the Platinum version).

If you want action with mecha, a bit of comedy and a smidgen of romance, the first thing that comes to mind is Full Metal Panic.

Uh.. I'm just dense. You know, I never even considered looking in a video store.. never noticed an Anime section in one before, but then again, I miss a lot of obvious stuff. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out.

What city is your father visiting? There are several big chain stores around the country which sell anime, but not all stores are in all cities. About the only one I can think of that would be just about everywhere is Best Buy. If you tell us what city, we should be able to give you a few more suggestions.

First off, seems to me you bought some Manga to begin with.

Secondly; for anime...

Most video stores have some. HMV, Virgin, and the like. Virgin (at least in Glasgow) also has a rack of Manga next to their Anime. Look around the area of the foreign films and martial arts movies for anime.

for manga...

Forbidden Planet, Travelling Man, and perseverence in terms of looking. There are probably other comic stores in your area, but you might not find them... If there's a local anime club, they could help you, but chances are, you haven't met them.
Ottakars and Waterstones are generally pretty bad for manga, in Glasgow we have a Forbidden Planet with a very good selection (at least 600 titles) and a Borders with a good range also; (a bookcase and a half) so I think you just need to keep looking, or widen your area of searching.

But perseverence is the key. It's possible (and common) to import items, but if the title is available domestically, there's really no reason.

And I reccomend Gekiganger, if you can find it... It's unlicensed... Series you could buy? Nadesico is really really good. It combines comedy, action, Mecha, romance, in one great series. And it features the greatest anime-in-anime ever found!

I live near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk so any chance of me finding any sections devoted to anime in my local shops is pretty much a million to one.. though I have been proven wrong once in this post already. My Father lives in Royston and Stevanage and Cambridge are both easily accesible when I'm round his house, so I guess I could try there.

You can't discount stores before you try. Even if you don't find anything in one store, you can look in another one.

something like eva is Rahxephon, there is an entire set out. the animation is superb with great characters and action. its a mature sci-fi anime with a bit of mecha, A LOT of drama, and just a bit comedy, at least in the begining. and for a mecha anime related with space is gundam seed. there are also older gundam anime from the 80,s and 90's, but that can get complicated, so go with seed for now.

There's always play.com - usually $5 cheaper than the highstreet with free postage (fast too).

OK guy, I have something for you:

SaiKano (Saishuheiki Kanojo/Ultimate Weapon Girlfriend)

Quote:
Action, Drama, Sci-Fi (inculdes pretty much anything related to space), Mecha (ha ha, theres one word that I know what it means) and Comedy (not a particular fan of this area, but the occasional comic moment in a usually serious anime is no bad thing, right?)

Action - YES!
Drama - OH GOD, YES!
Sci-Fi - DOUBLE YES!
Mecha - No
Comedy - Has its moments, but they are rare, exactly what you want.
Quote:
but if it shows a naked person for a few seconds or kissing/hugging, etc who gives a shit, K?

I believe there is one scene where you see the main characters breasts, but it is all very tasteful, trust me on this one.
Quote:
Controlled romance, however, in my opinion adds something to a story, especially if adds to a characters personality or adds a little comedy

AFFIRMATIVE! SaiKano provides that also.
Quote:
complex and slowly realised characters

Its like SaiKano was made for you.
Quote:
good storyline, action, guns, character devlopment, progressive storyline

ALL most definetly YES!

For some basic information about SaiKano please visit the ANN encyclopedia.

Now something more:
Quote:
I am also heavily interested in computers

Serial Experiments Lain

Quote:
Anime similar to NGE also appreciated.

I will have to check with him, I will email him. I know he is staying on an Airforce Base with a friend, and I do not know how much this will restrict him from visiting places outside. I'll edit this post with the name when I get it.

It's almost scary how accurate of description this is of my recommendation. Dude, everything in bold above that you're looking for is in:

Highly recommended that you check this one out, after seeing episode one I think you'll be hooked Smile

Yeah, I was going to check it out sooner or later because of all the good feedback it recieved. However, as a 15 year old who has just bought himself an X850XT graphics card and an Athlon 64 my budget is limeted at the moment, with all these good anime series I just don't know how I am going to look at it all. It depends on where your father is going to be, but I get my manga in Borders or Barnes and Nobles. You can go to bordersstores.com or www.bn.com to find a store near where ever. I get my anime at Best Buy, but you can also find a good anime selection at mediaplay, FYE, and suncoast. Manga here from the Shonen Jump line (part of VIZ) comes at 7.95 (USD) and 7.99. Shoujo Beat graphic novels (also part of VIZ) come at 8.99. Most other GN's come at 9.95/9.99. The company Del Rey charges 10.95. Dark Horse charges a little more for series such as Trigun and Hellsing, but the strange thing is, the hardbacks are cheaper. I don't know how much anime you'll get with $50, but you can get a good amount of manga. There are also many online stores to buy off of, but the shipping might be higher overseas. The retail price for anime here is 29.99 normally, but if your father gets to Best Buy it's usually a bit cheaper, maybe about 20?
An anime I really liked is Fullmetal Alchemist. It has a good plot, good character development, and humor. So it's a good mix of a lot of things. The only down side is that FMA isn't Sci-fi at all. It takes place in the early 1900's, but it's not boring at all. A slowly developing story/characters would be in Witch Hunter Robin. It has guns and is more of a serious show, but you need patience. It's not boring by any means, but the plot takes off at around episode 14. Do you by any chance like to read? I dunno, maybe you'd like to check out R.O.D. the OVA? If you like the OVA there's still a whole TV series out there. R.O.D. stands for Read or Die, BTW. It does have a catchy plot and the characters are well done. But this is a bit lighter than WHR or NGE. That's about all I've seen in your genres.
Careful with Saikano, ANN gives it a mature rating.
