I have heard good things about both, but I want your opinions.
I like comedy and some decent fight scenes, and I hear both have it.I just need the best one overall.

Well... comparing those is kinda silly, since Fruits Basket is clearly a shoujo series, while Ranma fits comfortably in the Shounen genre. They are (not quite) polar opposites. With Fruits Basket, while there is a little bit of fighting, the storyline doesn't revolve around that. It's got some comedy, but it's more wistful and dramatic in its feel.

Ranma is choc full of fight scenes and comedy, but is highly repetitious in it's nature. It's not very deep, and doesn't really go very far for as long as it is.

Personally, I'd take Fruits Basket for its character development and story. But if you want more action, you're better off with Ranma.

Well, according to ANN, Fruits Basket's median rating is excellent, whereas Ranma's is very good. Ranma is more than twice as long as Fruits Basket, so if you're not too bent on spending 380 USD, it's best not to go with Ranma. I haven't read Fruits Basket, but I thought Ranma got a little boring after a while.

i agree with you that ranma doesn't go anywhere really, but it's a nice ride

there are some really good moments, some really funny scenes in each book and it definitely has the essence of a "cult" book that fans love

i think it's worth it to atleast buy the first one and see if you fall in love with the characters.

It's like comparing apples and oranges. The two series are extremely different.

Ranma does not take itself very seriously. It's a very fun series. What's more important is that Ranma has a very high "re-read" value. If you're just sitting bored on a mundane afternoon, you can pick up a completely random volumes and enjoy it without having to think too much about it. Fruits Basket is very different. It has good comedy, romance, and drama. It's more engaging and a little more in-depth and serious.

This is a hard question, because both series are very different from each other. The stories in Ranma 1/2 are very random, while Fruits Basket is pretty linear. Also, the comedy in Ranma is mostly slapstick and gag humor. And yeah, Ranma's a Shounen while Fruits Basket is a Shoujo.

I love Ranma 1/2, and I thought Fruits Basket was good but not my favorite, but that's my opinion. My advice is to try the first volume of both series and continue with the one you like.

Well, not entirely, but humor is used quite differently here. FB is more on the dramatic side of things, and the humor is needed to break up things and help change the pace at times. It's effective and enjoyable, but very different than how it's used in Ranma.

It's slapstick and juvenile at times. Of course, we all can enjoy lowbrow humor occasionally, but Ranma's suffers that the jokes and situations are too repetitive. While you may "LOL" at first, it's the story arcs that will keep you going later. Takahashi is an effective storyteller, so you'll likely keep reading if you enjoy it. Just keep in mind that if you get into it, you can expect the same type of humor repeatedly.

Yeah, you will laugh out loud while reading Ranma. And while it may get a bit samey towards the end I wouldn't overstate that aspect. It stays more than fresh enough.

As for Fruits Basket... as was said earlier, it's comparing apples and oranges. Both are tasty but in the end it comes down to personal preference.

I suspect you will like both so why not try both. Ranma depends more on comedy than drama so if you decide to stop collecting one of the series, Ranma can be dropped without too much regret.

They're both pretty good, Fruits Basket is more shoujo, it gets really serious at moments and while it does have it's comedic moments. It has it's fight scenes and rivalry. As for Ranma, it's mroe comedy based and there is more violence, there is also a lot more fanservice. Sounds like Ranma 1/2 would be better for you.

Well I have'nt read Ramna 1/2 but I think that Fruits basket is really funny at times, like when Ayame and Shigure are in the same room. Wink But the thing I enjoy about Fruits Basket is that while it's really funny at times it's also very sweet and touching. Now the Anime closley follows the first eight volumes so if you've seen the anime then you will love the manga.

So I would defiently suggest Fruits Basket as your next series. Smile

Go with Fruits Basket first, then Ranma. With Ranma you are more likely to be spending in the range of $700-1100 depending on where you shop.
