Well, the people there can still get their anime, even if there is the possibility of it being banned on TV. Personally, I'd like to see Chinese animation grow. Since anime won't be on TV, I'm concerned that this will be a bussiness boom for bootleggers. I know for a fact that official releases are hard to get. Actually, I'm wondering if there even are official releases. Y' see, when someone I know when to China, he bought me a Hikaru no Go anime fold out from a large bookstore, but it turned out to be a bootleg anyway. So I've been wondering, if an official bookstore doesn't have 'em, who does? Anyway, Got OT for a second there I wonder if the people in China are going to complain? I know that my pen pal there loves anime, and she can't be the only one. Confused

She's probably not the only one, but it doesn't seem that a handful of people are going to be able to change the flow or mindset anytime soon. I mean, the tensions between China and Japan in particular are just ridiculious. I've always been one to follow "Don't hate them because they're sucessful. Hate them if they make a crappy product." I'm well aware of the racial tensions and such which come into place, but sheesh. How is this going to help anyone? The hardcore nationalist people are already enough. Is someone really going to go "Hey! This once-easy-to-access stuff that has now become even-easier-to-access stuff made in my country is tons better than all that foreign crap I've been going out of my way to watch!"

Before I end, I'd like to very much apoligize in advance if my post is offending any Chinese people in particular. I'm not ranting towards any individual or racial group, but more so toward the overly nationalistic mindset the government seems bent on drilling into it's people.

Sigh....

O well, it's not like we can really do anything to help. But like .Sy wrote:

If there is a large no. of complaints by anime fans then they can't really do ought(well they can, unfortunately) but it will b a while till they can lay down the ban straight away. I just hope this so called 'Law' won't affect Hong Kong aswell...

O and another thing did u people know that(srry if I can't use this word, newbie ere) Hentai has been banned in Hong Kong? Only found out when my cousin went to back and were lookin for anime aswell as hentai and a local told him they've been banned.

Speaking of which, if they ban things, does anyone know if they're making any progress clamping down on those bootlegs? Honestly, the government should get their acts together. (Not specifically in China, but everywhere in that region) If the Chinese animators make a show, I doubt they'd want to see it bootlegged. Then, the whole "ban foreign animation on TV to help Chinese animation" thing would just sound stupid.

Well, not every show necessarily needs a DVD/VCD release, they can just bet on the reception it will get on TV and work it out from there

That's usually safe since you can't pirate TV ratings...

Well, I dunno how it works

Isn't China already a totalitarian nation. They already filter out the internet and it all goes through the government's computer system first.

Wow...more protectionism from the free trading loving Chinese. They are concerned about about dumping? Can you say hypocrisy?

Limiting foreign animation sales in China will only hurt the Chinese animators who those EVIL Japanese and others have outsoursed TO China. Are they trying to start a tariff war with Japan? Do they want to put Chinese animators out of work? Did someone open a new opium den in Beijing?

The best way to start a domestic animation industry is to create a domestic market with an open distribution system. This will allow local companies to creat niche markets which the foreign competitors will be unlikely to capitalize on because its very hard to market down but the local companies will be able market up eventually creating a powerful domestic industry.

You cannot simply bar foreign products and demand that government owned companies create new products for a market they know nothing about and expect to maintain the market.

You can't make people buy from Ford if they want a Camry from Toyota. People will simply buy fewer vehicles.

This is even more true with animation which is a entertainment item. Create your own demand for your product and don't demand that government hijack another market's customers...it won't work.

I really wish the officals in China would leave the feudal economics in the dark ages where it belongs.

Since China could ban, I assume, all foreign animation, that should include animation from the US/Disney/Dreamworks/Pixar. It should not be only animation from Japan, right?

Has anybody thought that this just isn't a hate act against Japan? I believe it was last summer that the same Chinese government department held back the release dates for some Western movies until after the summer break in hopes that less kids would get to see them. They did this because they blamed the recent spike in crime and juvenile delinquincy on foreign influences brought in through mass media products. In other words, they are tired of their youth adapting outside cultures.

Yes, I am aware that there is major tension between China and Japan and I'm sure some of that is to blame for this possible ban, but I think the Chinese government is trying to cut off outside cultural influences coming into their country and prime time foreign cartoons is just another way of doing it. If this happens, expect to see a ban or major cut down of foreign movies being shown in theatres, also.

Yep. From the sound of this, they won't just be banning Japanese anime from TV, but also American, French, and Korean TV cartoons.

I've actually seen this coming for a while now. I remember right before Shrek 2 came out there was a mini-article (More like a paragraph, really.) in Entertainment Weekly saying that China is starting to limit foreign-made films from being shown in theatres to promote local movies. (Although, knowing China, i'm sure there's something else going on as well.)

I, for one, don't really care what happens on Chinese TV. (Short of "Nuke the West" propoganda, of course.) I'm much more concerned about how easy-going the chinese government has been on bootleggers, especially DVD bootleggers.

Darn otaku kids mucking up my fandom with their $30 Trigun sets . . .

Note: Neko is not hateful towards people of Chinese descent, just a-holes of Chinese descent.

It's very plausible that they're starting to restrict outside cultural influences. That's what's been happening for so long. At the same time I'm sure they want to keep their booming economy booming for as long as possible. I'm sure they don't want the monetary benefits of that to go away. But if they want only the monetary and economic gains offered by globalization and so on, without having any of the cultural invasions that come along with it, that's just trying to have your cake and eat it.

I can understand protectionism, but then said country has to be ready to accept the consequences of it. It's somewhat hypocritical when countries have protectionism and then they still want to 'invade' other countries with their goods.

Tangent first: Aoi_Sekai, I love that catgirl picture. It's so cute.

Now for the blatant and almost bigotic cynicism: It's only a matter of time before they fully lower the Iron Curtain on the People's Dictatorship of China.

Ironically, one could argue that China is taking the worst parts from Japan's Edo and Meiji periods and putting them together to make the country look absolutely ludicrous.
