*I*'m rather surprised ADV wound up grabbing it. Not their kind of series at all...though it would make sense if they only saw the first couple of episodes

In any case, though, it's great to see Gainax go back to producing original works!

ADV seems to license pretty much everything under the sun. Sailor Moon, Full Metal Panic, Kenshin, Saiyuki, Princess Nine... what, in your opinion, is an 'ADV type' of show?

That's just the point - they seem to go primarily for the fairly obvious and safe action/adventure/comedy stuff that isn't particularly obscure nor particularly Japanese.

Abenobashi, on the other hand, *is* a very complicated and just plain-out "weird" series that is aimed squarely at dedicated fans of anime in particular and media in general, what with all the film references it squeezes in, especially towards the later episodes.

It's a good question, though - can we come up with a good description of the types of shows a particular company is likely to license?

Except Excel Saga, which needs a dictionary's worth of translation notes to make sense. Same with Azumanga Daioh. I don't agree with the assertion that ADV only licenses 'safe' titles.

well, "safe" as in "basically guaranteed hits".

For all your dislike of AzuDai, it was a popular series in Japan, and was a mildly popular series in the fansub underground.

As for Abenobashi, it wasn't something that interested me, but that didn't mean it wasn't "popular" with otaku in Japan.

The least "safe" title I think they've released in recent history was Princess Nine, which apparently did so well that they're only now considering a 2nd title composed primarily of females (AzuDai).

CA: Also, note that ADV _probably_ first got a glance at the series while it was in development. That's not terribly uncommon nowadays. It's entirely possible that they had licensed it back then and were contractually obligated not to disclose it publically until a certain time.
