After reading a bit about josei (manga aimed at young women) I've become curious. Excluding yaoi titles, are there any josei titles available in America? The only thing I've read that seems to fall under this category are the stories featured in Rumiko Takahashi's Rumic Theater anthology. Many of the stories feature very down-to-earth domestic situations, often starring house wives and brides to be. I love these stories, although they are very different to read. So, has anyone seen anything like this in America?

The Erica Sakurazawa books (they all have different titles but have similarly designed covers), Moyoco Anno's Happy Mania, and the not-advertised-nearly-enough Sweat and Honey.

Watch out though, some folks peg them as trashy mind-porn novels for bored office ladies, so don't expect every single one to be an artistic masterpiece. But they're definitely a different shade from the manga mainstream.

No, Kaikan Phrase is a shoujo manga, not a josei manga, although it has A LOT of sexual situations.

Many josei manga are serialized in josei-shi (ladies' magazines), which are not exclusively manga, but also features articles and make-up tips, and so on.
Kazuko Fujita, a former shoujo mangaka now writing josei manga, wrote in the sidenotes section of her manga that the josei-shi expanded her audience so much that she got a fan letter from a 70-year-old lady Very Happy

Oh, I want to read that so badly, but I haven't heard any feedback at all (negative or positive) so I know nothing about it. I haven't even been able to find it in a store anywhere. Have you read it? (Or anybody?) I saw the pages that were in one of Tokyopop's samplers and I just loved it.

Moyoko Anno and Erica Sakurazawa mostly.

Also you could try Clamp's The One I Love. Doll and Petshop of Horrors are also manga that were published for older women(albiet a tad different from most josei manga). Tramps Like Us (Kimi wa Pet) is also josei.

The folks at another manga forum that I go to say that it's terrific. And a lot of them are pretty critical of shoujo and josei, so it takes a lot to impress. Wink

I am so glad that someone else asked this question because I have been getting up my courage to do so. I am hooked on "Tramps" (have #5 sitting next to me and 6 and 7 are preordered from Tokyopop). So far I have been dissapointed in the two Sakurazawa I bought, I don't care about the characters so could care less about their lovelives.
My questions is if anyone knows of a good site to search for or even preview Josei? You know, one that doesn't look like an add for "Girls gone wild?" I do prefer the ones rated "M" Embarassed
