I'm always browsing for manga on ebay all the time and I hate going through hundred of auction which offer supposely legal "ebook" scan of manga. Also this guy from canada claim he got the license to these ebook and he's selling them for .99 each. The worst part is people buy these up and give positive feedback. I've brought good set of real manga for cheap on ebay and I would hate to see it turn into a camping ground for bootleg scan (like all the bootleg HK anime). Should licensor start suing people on ebay for selling these stuff? |

That’s ridiculous! It's really odd how certain things like this can go unnoticed for so long. I hope he (or she) gets what’s coming!

Unfortunatally there really doesn't seem to be a way to regulate it at the moment. eBay is flooded with bootlegs of foreign films and anime. I've never really used eBay for this (if I wanted bootlegs Chinatown is a 30 minute subway ride), but a ton of people are selling and buying bootlegs. Manga scans burned on CD aren't nearly as popular since it's pretty easy to find scans online, even for licenced series, but there are still people trying to make a buck (usually with the shipping fees). I really wouldn't be concerned about this affecting manga sales though; I think most people actually want to own a book rather than read it online, and those that don't probobly are going to turn to downloading. If I recall, littlegreenwolf had some troubles with someone using her groups scans to make money on eBay. I can't remember if whe was successful in getting the item unlisted, but it does illustrate that most scanslation groups are generally moral who wouldn't use their scans to turn out a profit. |

I'm going to ask something stupid, so please be patient with an idiot living in a hole. Does the government have the right to disallow the selling of illegal material on Ebay? I read an article in the newspaper a while back saying how te people on Ebay try to keep ivory from being sold there, so could they do that with obviously illegal bootlegs? And yes, I do hate the people who sell scans on Ebay.

Ebay doesn't unauthorized copies of item being sold, especially videogames. The problem really is that the bootleg are made to be like legimitate product that even most buyer wouldn't know the different. Read the post above, the guy said that the Vagabond scan cd are "Ebook" just so the scan would appear to be like other legal ebooks. Yes I know manga scan isn't as popular as HK Bootleg. But you can pretty much find scan for any popular series like Beserk, One Piece and more being sold on ebay. It isn't a huge problem now but might be later because once the people buy the cd, what is stopping them from coping it and selling it on ebay themself? It's not like everybody can get scan of any series they want online for free and most people on ebay actually believe these are true legit "ebook" item The sphere of influence is spreading to more people. Real manga auction are worth less because people are buying scan instead, so selling used manga on ebay won't yield a good return. For this to be acceptable on ebay, it just encourage more Jackalope to do it and there's like a new scan seller almost every week.. Why not stop it while it's a small problem. Because ebay don't monitor the legitimacy of the item on ebay, then they arn't concern about it as long as they turn a profit for each auction. Ebay have banned member who sold hk bootleg in the past (if enough people report or disatisfied). It wouldn't be hard if anime companies to hire a college student or two so they can filter and report every illegal anime/manga auction item to protect the companie's interested, but that would mean ebay would be losing money and they would hate that. |

Augh, it irritates me all the time seeing scanlations on eBay. That and all the other bootlegs out there. But what's even worse is knowing that people buy them.
I do work for a scanlation group that does Bleach doujinshi(ethical issues there as well, I know) and it gets under my skin when I see that sort of thing going on. People who sell scanlations are not only ripping off the original authors, publishers, and future distributors, but also the fans who put such effort into their work. It takes a lot of gumption to scan, translate, and edit even the worst scanlations and it's a pity to see this work of love turned into a scam for love of money.

Yeah, my group had one person selling our scanlations. I e-mailed the seller once asking him to remove our scans immeadiantly, and then reported him to ebay for bootleging after he did squat. After reporting him to ebay, I haven't seen him pop up since, and no one's really tried selling our scans since. We also now put on every couple of pages "if you paid for this, you were jipped" to try and discourage reselling of our scanlations.
