Hey! I'm trying to get together a rough list of anime made after books, specifically European or American books. Of course I'm aware of The World Masterpiece Series, and there's things like Kiki, Howl and now even Gankutsuou, but I need more more more ... Very Happy
And I'm guess I'm not feeding google the right keywords, so I was hoping someone here might be able to help Wink

Thanks in advance

Well...here are some anime and manga that are roughly related to your request

-Battle Royale: First came the book, then the movies, then a manga, based on the book.

-Perfect Blue: Based on a novel.

-Ikkitousen: Based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Both a true historical event and a famous literary work.

-Vampire Hunter D: Based on a series of novels of the same name.

I believe that exhausts my knowledge of anime based on books, because those are the only anime/manga that I have seen, that are based on novels. Sorry that they aren't based on western novels...but this was the best that I could come up with.

The first thing that comes to mind is Nadia-Secret of the Blue Water, based on the Jules Verne novel “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea".

On a side note to an earlier post: Battle Royale, the novel, is one of the best books I've ever read. I enjoyed the movie, but the book develops characters and plot in a way that a movie never could.

After a little more thought, I think a large percentage of anime was influenced by Nobokov’s "Lolita".

Another book series, Crest/Banner of the Stars. But the book that has probably had the most Anime based off it is the Kojiki, particularly the Izumo parts.

One thing that says it all is the dedication at the begining.
spoiler[I dedicate this to everyone I love. Even though it might not be appreciated.] It makes me think that Takami feels that the real world, and that of Battle Royale are closer to each other then we would like to pretend.
Never the less, this is an extremely good book.

All the Best,

Nani?

Gankutsuou is based entirely off of the Count of Monte Crisco. Hibane Ramnei is based off of a book called Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, This has a lot of information on the book and how it relates to the series.

After giving it some thought, I remembered that Nickelodeon once aired an anime called Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, based on the book of The Brother's Grimm. http://www.absoluteanime.com/grimms_fairy_tale_classics/

You can go there for more details about it.

I just found out that Nadia was based on "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", and I just saw the first episode last week. Is the book really like that? Confused

When I was in the Philippines, they showed the anime "Princess Sara" which is based on The Little Princess. It was so popular that there was also a live-action movie that starred famous Filipino movie stars. It was closer to the anime version than the books.

For America, the only one I can think of (not listed yet) is the Starship Troopers OAV. For Japanese novels there is Ginga Eiyu Densetsu, Arslan and Vampire Hunter D to add to the list.
