Schodt Title: Creation of a Manga-Comic Hybrid The Oriental Society of Australia in conjunction with Japanese Studies, the University of Sydney cordially invites members, friends and guests of the Society to a special seminar. We have the pleasure of a presentation by Frederik L. Schodt, prestigious and world renowned expert on manga for this most auspicious occasion. Mr. Schodt's subject will be about the English localisation of Japanese manga. In the late 80's and early 90's, when Western popular appreciation of manga was taking off, Western publishers tried to publish manga in a format and frequency familiar to the local audience- reading left-to-right, in thin 32 page standard comic book sized booklets, and released monthly. To facilitate this, often the art would need to be changed (images mirrored, art retouched). Something happened though. English translated manga began to be published in formats closer to the Japanese originals- and what was even more amazing, audiences accepted the change. Frederik L. Schodt is best known as a writer, translator and authority on manga. His books include Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics, the first English treatise to look at manga as an art form and as a culture, Inside the Robot Kingdom: Japan, Mechatronics, and the Coming Robotopia, America and the Four Japans: Friend, Foe, Model, Mirror, and Dreamland Japan: Writings on Modern Manga. He also translated Henry Yoshitaka Kiyama's graphic novel, The Four Immigrants Manga (1931), now recognised as one of the first graphic novels ever created. In recognition for his efforts in popularising manga culture around the world, Mr. Schodt has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette by the Japanese government, and also a special category of Ministry of Foreign Affairs International Manga Award.
