The anime that started it all for me was Dragonball!
I've always had a fascination with the martial arts like kung fu, karate and such, so when I saw Dragonball and realized it had a lot of fighting in it, I was hooked! Another thing that got me watching the show was Goku's tail. Don't ask me why, but when I was little I had a thing with tails and I always wanted a tail myself, so I'd wrap a towel around my waist and pretend the part hanging down would be my tail! (ya, I know; I'm weird.) |

The Anime that started me was Princess Mononoke. And in the same day I also watched the series of Cyber City OEDO 808. So they both "Ignited" my interest in anime.

Hmm... my ignition into anime was a multilateral operation.
I was really into comics when I was younger and at these conventions my dad and I went to, there would be some small tables of anime and such, so I at least knew what the style was to look for. I began finding it on syndicated TV in the form of Dragonball, Sailormoon, and Ronin Warriors (Yoroiden Samurai Troopers). As I was watching those, I liked the more complex stories and action of anime compared to other afternoon cartoons I had on when I did homework. But what really turned me down the path of becoming a complete fanboy was when I bought a copy of Project A-ko on dubbed VHS (Oh, showing it's age now). After seeing how intricate and amazing the artwork and the technical skill of the artists in that film alone lit the fire of fanboyism in me. |

Now you see, this is really what I was going for when i posted this thread. All of us have looked back in deep nostalgia, and remembered the old days, of when we really didn't know what Japanese-anime was. (I call it Japanese-anime because everything with a storyline is technially anime) anyways, thats besides the point. The amazing thing, is that we all know which anime started it all, and why we loved it. Keep the replies comming guys! im loving them!

With out a doubt I would say that the most influential animes that really got me hooked and just left me saying "....well.... that was inspiring" would be Ghost in the shell the movie, Akira, and outlaw star. Akira and ghost in the shell got me hooked when i first saw them when me and my friends were going thru some movies he had (no idea where he got them) and the concepts, art and imagination of the movies just had me stunned. Then i saw the more serious episodes of outlaw star and said i think i found an interest in the world. It got me into my job Digital video and art.

well when I was a little kid I loved shows like transformers, robotech and voltron, shows with obvious japanese connections, but I knew nothing about that kind of stuff at the time still I knew shows like voltron and robotech were different than the rest of the animated shows on tv. I finally learned the term anime though from watching the scifi channel when they would have anime marathrons and show movies on saturday morning and watching all of that made me really interested, but it wasn't until I watched Gundam Wing during its intial run on CN that I was like wow this is what I've been looking for and it got me researching gundam and I discovered the UC shows and sought them out and they blew me away and thus my anime fandom began in full force and I moved on to lots of other series and genres, but the mecha genre still remains my favorite, come on who doesn't like giant robots beating the crap out of each other???

Hehe, I'm not really sure which anime got me hooked. All I can really remember is watching anime (not knowing what it was called) and eventually just made it something I watched every now and then. I was always excited to watch the next tape of DBZ though when my friend got it.

As mentioned in previous thread I grew up watching Super Robot shows and a bunch of long forgotten series as a kid. It wasn't until 1985 when I became a real obsessed anime otaku. This was when Zeta Gundam was released. The series was much anticipated, having already spent the previous 5 years with a small stack of Gundam books and a few Bandai kits. There were dozens of books on Zeta available when the series was released, and I was compelled to purchase them all. Every issue of Newtype, the first magazine I collected monthly, had a Zeta poster or cover. There was a store (it's still there) called Mikado in SF Japan town which played copies of the series in front of the store. Soon after I managed to get copies of the entire series, on my Sony Beta, and I watched the series countless times. Even though I loved anime before 1985, Zeta was the first series to have so much merchandising. Here I am 20 years later. My poorly painted 1/144 kits have been replaced by the new 1/100 MG kits. My old Beta tapes have been replaced by LDs and recently DVDs (I've spent far to much $ on Gundam) but I'm still a big Zeta fan.

The first anime I saw was Street Fighter, that was when I was around five, but I didn't understand that it was anime. Then, I saw Dragonball Z. I really got into it from the first time I watched it. What caught my interest was the story, instead of just having a story for 30 minutes or so then moving onto a completely different story the next episode like cartoons do, this was continuous. The animation, the storyline, and basically because it was the first time I had ever seen anthing like it.

The anime that really got me in to this whole crazy lifestyle was Excel Saga. It still makes me swell with laughter like a bloated tick. That anime made me get hooked on anime something good! (among some other things =p) It is still my tride and true favorite.

How is this thread different from a 'favorite anime' thread?
... ...? Anyways the anime that started it for me was Gundam Wing, and Dragonball Z. I first started with DBZ and i just liked DBZ, but not anime, then I watched Gundam and like Toonami ![]() |

Apparently you haven't read abunai's explanation and LikwidCypher's joyful response. Those two questions are quite different. Take myself as an example. I started watching Mazinger Z and Gatchaman when I was two. Of course I could hardly understand a thing; neither did they make any strong impact (yet somehow I prefered Gatchaman over Mazinger, and I never get into mecha stuff ever since). When I was 4-5, there were Candy Candy and Captain Future, yet I was still not very into them either. Then I almost stopped watching anime throughout my elementary school years, spending my weekends on American TV shows like The A-Team, MacGyver, Airwolf, etc. All those shows were dubbed, though; MTS was not an option until many years later. It was not until my 7th grade, when I saw Laputa in Japanese for the first time. I was drawn by the gripping story, fluid animation, and fantastic music. Needless to say, I became a fan of Miyazaki's instantly, following every single film of his since then. My favorite anime film up to this day is his Mononoke Hime. |
