I read Shelf Life today and it apears that there is now a Patlabor TV box set out, just how long is Patlabor? Are there more box sets, or is this the only one?

Lemme see...I believe there's 2 OAVs, 2 movies, the TV series...another movie which isn't out yet....I think that's it. There should be at least one more box set for the TV series, but it's not out yet. (Anime on DVD doesn't have any info on how many sets will be in the series.)

The Patlabor TV series is 40-some episodes long. The box set contains the first 18, I think.
Patlabor's one of my all-time favs, and I personally like the comedic series way more than the serious movies. Mamoru Oshii should never have quit writing comedy, he's brilliant at it!

Thanks guys!
Anyway, Slim, I really liked the movies (the first Patlbor movie was the third anime I purchased way back then). Anyway, I'll definitely check the series out, it's a lot like the manga right? (I read the second GN Viz put out.

Yeah, the manga's tone is pretty much identical to the tv series, though the story structure is different. Takeo doesn't show up until about episode 25 or so, which is a shame because she's potentially my favorite character after Goto.

Hmm... I hope the box set doesn't stop retailers from stocking the individual disks since I've yet to see volumes 2, 3 or 4 on retail shelves in Montreal for some reason...

He did write the "Mini-Pato" Patlabor parody shorts, which will be on the special edition release of Patlabor 3.

Hmm... not that I'm usually one to bitch about the number of episodes on any given DVD, but, according to Mike Crandol's review of volume 4 of the Patlabor TV series, the 4th volume only has 4 episodes on it, which is the average number of episodes on your typical anime DVD, buuuuutttttttt... the old VHS tapes had 5 episodes each to start off and then moved up to 6 episodes each towards the end (CPM skipped "Midnight Blue" and the other ending songs on all but the final episode on each tape to cram that all on). If I had to guess, I'd wager CPM has to stretch the DVD release of the TV series out a volume or two more than the VHS release to pay for the dub, which I suppose is a good thing in terms of the popularity of the series, though the pronounciation of some of the names on the first volume, still the only volume I have on DVD thus far , left much to be desired ("Sheej" for "Shige"?).
I can't wait for them to get to releasing on DVD the second OVA series, a.k.a. "The New Files", which I think are the finest Patlabor tales ever animated (haven't seen the new movie yet), though I like the TV series just fine too.

Yeah, that's really throwing off my "add DVD to shelf, throw out corresponding VHS" game! A few more releases and the DVDs will be a whole volume number behind their VHS counterparts.
Oh well, c'est la industrie anime'.

I thought all the VHS copies of Patlabor TV were Sub only.
Anyway, I was highly disappointed with the dub on the TV show (Especially since the movies were done very well by Manga). Personally, I wish Manga bought the rights to the TV series and used the same cast. But I guess it is water under the bridge now. The dubbing does seem to improve in some characters in disc 2, but disc 1 *shudder*, bad times. Plus what is up with disc 1's chapter selection? That was retarded, thank god they fixed that.
Ahem, well enough ranting... Overall though I really like the series so far. Thanks again to everyone who made the recommendation.

Yes, the Patlabor TV series was only available on VHS sub-only, which is why, I think, they're stretching out the bilingual DVD release a volume or two more than the VHS release was, to pay for the dub.
