No subtitles?!?! What's next? Shinkai won't have a translator for the Q & A?

As much as I love all of Shinkai's works and this was my most anticipated event at the convention this year, I'm not going to sit in line for hours upon hours for a film that I won't really be able to understand. Not that it would take anything away or that I couldn't enjoy the overall meaning or simply the animation, but I feel like my mind is going to wander way more often than I would like and I love to give whatever it is I'm consuming my 100% attention.
This is really somewhat disappointing. I know the movie just came out about 3 months ago in Japan, but does anyone know why they would premiere a movie without subtitles? I'm not going to call this "stupid" because I'm sure this is thought over very thoroughly and there was some reasoning behind this decision.

Well, I guess even Otakon thinks it'll just be scenery porn.

I wish I could be there!! I know everyone thinks Shinkai is kind of a one-trick pony but I love his stuff so hard! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a R1 release to come out of this.

As long as it's not showing during the Fullmetal Alchemist movie or AMV's...I'd probably make a point in seeing it, even without subtitles. Voices of a Distant Star is my favorite anime movie.

"Everyone"? No. very few people overall probably. I'm jealous of otakon....Shinkai was one of the people who really got me into anime back in the early 2000's so just meeting him would be epic

why would the character designer and art director take a huge step backwards from their 5CM work? character models from the 80's were not attractive.

I was really excited about this at first until I read it was unsubbed...that's a pretty big disappointment, I would think that at an anime convention held in an English-speaking area, the film could at least be subbed....

Unfortunately, there is not yet an official sub of this film -- and since it's coming with the director, and coming directly from ComixWave, it is coming with the restrictions that they place on it. Those amount to "we will bring an HD copy to show, but we haven't got it subbed yet."
The only way to have a subtitled version would be to get it illegally. We aren't going to do that, obviously.
Needless to say, we'd rather have an official, high-quality premiere with the director present. Even if it's not in the most ideal format.

On the bright side, the Sub-vs-Dub people won't have much traction to fight over. Fans of subs will be in the same boat as people with poor eyesight.

jvowles: Sounds more like they're screwing viewers just to bypass piracy to me. Ironically, someone will no doubt end up recording the screening and fansubbing it anyway. The Japanese need to stop being scared of promoting their anime to American audiences.

*sigh* I was hoping this would be shown, but without subs I'm going to have to pass. I love all of Shinkai's works and celebrate Shinkai Day (weekend) every year, but I can't watch this without knowing what's going on and having the story spoiled. Oh well, there's plenty of other things to do.
Hey, Jim, maybe you should stick a well timed electronic scrolling sign under the screen.

Being an old school anime fan, I don't mind the movie not having subtitle. There is pro's and con's for everything.
Anyway, you guys are so lucky. You have this incredible director coming to your convention. It seems like you guys are more faithful to anime creators than big conventions over here in the west coast.

I'd go if I were in the area. Shinkai's previous film's dialouge wasn't hard to understand in Japanese, and I doubt this one will be any different. I'd love to ask him some questions as well.
I can't wait to hear the elitist "WE SPEAK JAPANESE" people with their opinions, although I share most of them.

I don't mind the lack of subtitles either. I'm going to see it at the convention no matter what. I can't wait to see Shinkai-sensei in person!
Huh, I always thought that West Coast conventions had Japanese directors as guests too since 90% of American movie industry is over there.
