I am going to be blunt, that looks absolutely terrible. I've seen some of the original Voltron and for the most part, it was a pretty solid well made interesting anime.
As for this new Voltron, based off all that I've seen and heard, it does not really look like a show that looks even remotely interesting. |

I dunno about you, but I'd say they did. They seemed to just ape the art style rather than what actually draws people to anime (the writing), and this doesn't look any better. I doubt it'll be as good as the original anime (Golion, not the original Voltron edited dub) and I'm not even that big of a Golion fan to begin with. I'd be genuinely surprised if they killed a main character off on screen in a serious manner and treated the whole war as some kind of serious issue |

While the animation was crap and the less said about the opening song the better, the actual show wasn't that bad. It was fairly tightly written and got to have the animation concede to the writing, not the other way around.
Everyone acts like Golion was this sacred piece of art. It was a crappy ripoff of Voltes V and that's it. |

I liked it a lot.
It's definitely more of a Western cartoon than an anime, but it contained a number of nods to the original series while being a new series for today's kids. |

A slight correction needs to be made to this article. The man who produced the original Voltron is named Peter Keefe, not Peter O'Keefe.

@Jessica Hart The examples you provided are not anime, they were created by Americans, with much of the inspiration for the animation style and character designs stemming from anime. A good example would be an animated series or movie that was written by Americans and based on a Japanese anime or manga. Like, say, the Astro Boy movie. @TitanXL: have you actually watched any of the shows you are criticizing? Avatar: The Last Airbender had exceptional writing, plotting and direction, and has been praised by laypeople and critics alike. (The A.V. Club is currently reviewing the series, for instance, and the critic refuses to give individual episodes a letter grade because every episode averages an A- in her opinion). The Boondocks only resembles anime in its visual style, it's writing is completely, well, Aaron McGruder. There is no anime like it, I can assure you. I have never watched The Teen Titans, but it's based off a DC superhero book. 'Nuff said. I think there's a new, American-exclusive remake of Speed Racer on the air, and I suspect that at least one of the Sonic cartoon incarnations were written by Americans. I can't vouch for the quality of the writing on any of these shows since I have not watched them. But I thought "Astro Boy" was a pretty decent movie remake. It definitely retained the heart of the original. I have no clue whether Voltron will be any good. I'm more curious about Thundercats, myself.

Not sure if I want to continue with it. The only major thing that bothered me were the added children. Just wasn't feeling them and wished the show just revolve around the Voltron Force.

I've seen it and found it rather unimpressive, like a poor man's version of Naruto. Nothing really special if you've seen real anime, anyway. I have no idea what the A.V Club is, but I stopped paying attention to award shows and stuff when shows like Camp Lazlo are hailed as 'exemplary animation', or somehow the Simpsons keeps getting 'best animated television program' every year. Needless to say, I don't trust America's opinion on animation very much given the way it's handled here.
Well that is my point, it's like a Dave Chappelle comedy skit with anime art. He just aped the art style and nothing more (and went to the length to shell out money for Madhouse themselves to animate it for the second season... for some reason, I have no idea what that adds to a show) Otherwise, the humor and writing is your standard for that kind of comedy.
I'm not sure if you're saying that's a positive or a negative. I found that show to be more akin to the Pre-Teen Titans with how childish everyone acted and how, well, dumb it was. Can't say I'm a fan of superhero comics or cartoons in general, though. Their lack of a narratives and endings turn me off, and it's a shame how like 95% of action cartoons here are based on them. I did like Crispin Freeman's rant against it, though, he pointed out a lot of great flaws with it (and US animation in general)
If you mean Speed Racer: The Next Genration.. it's bad. There were three American Sonic cartoons. Adventures, SatAM, and Underground. All of them are.... well.. typical kids shows for the time, I suppose; though Underground is often considered the worst and fairly poor. The other two opinions vary depending on how much nostalgia people have attached to them. Granted, the OVA at the time wasn't much better, and we didn't really get a decent Sonic show that resembled the games until Sonic X. America is already at a disadvantage when it comes to animation compared to Japan, throwing in adaptions of Japanese properties just makes that slant even more steep, because there's no way they can tackle the same subject matter or cinematography quality. |
