Alright, so the point of this topic is for me to ask a simple question: Why do you like(or dislike) Panty shots / Fanservice?
As a 21 year old male, I never understood why so many guys love panty shot. To me, its actually annoying when a show is pretty much made JUST for fanservice / panty shots, or when a decent show is overrun with panty shots.
So why do people like animated panties so much? O_o
PS: If this is in the wrong place, i'm sorry :3

I like it when it's unexpected, fits a given situation, and is used to supplement a series. When a series has too much fanservice, has fanservice that's just ridiculously out of place, over the top or gross, or becomes--or even starts off right away as--nothing but a constant display of pointless, increasingly tasteless fanservice, it stops being a treat and becomes a total creepfest for depraved otaku. It's like having a plate of icing with no cake. And then there are times when it starts to feel less like fanservice and more like straight-up misogyny {I'M LOOKING DIRECTLY AT YOU, QUEEN'S BLADE AND IKKI TOUSEN}.

Really, as much as I hate ecchi and other otaku shows, I don't necessarily have a problem with fanservice. A lot of good shows have plenty of fanservice. (Evangelion for example). What I have a problem with is when it becomes so absurdly prevalent and/or contrived that it detracts from the show.

This is what I meant to say. When I say fanservice, I meant to extreme levels.
I dont mind if its just there, but if its constantly throw in your face it gets annoying to me.

I don't like it because it is simply annoying. Also to me it often shows a lack of creativity and ability to make a compelling scene. I feel like panty shots are often thrown in as if they expect that to make up for story weaknesses and lack of directing or animating ability.
But sadly fanservice and panty shots have become so common in anime both good and bad that I just stopped caring. I mean when it happens I still think it's pointless, but I don't complain anymore. And I guess sometimes there is an actual reason why they have that kind of thing happen.

No such thing as too much fanservice.
Shows like Qwaser are awesome because of how over the top it is.. the final episode of the first season had the most epic breast grope in the history of anime.
In normal anime, it's nice. The males and females of a show can be very attractive so it's nice the show throws us a bone and gives the audience fan-service scenes. I can't see too many girls complaining about Gray's gimmick of stripping down nude at random, or vice versa with Lucy's fetish outfits she finds herself in at times

Fanservice doesn't generally bother me much. Sometimes it's so blatant that it can't be overlooked, but for the most part I tend to not let it register on my consciousness. It's a common part of anime, so I accept it. It can sometimes be good for a laugh though. Najica Blitz Tactics is so over the top it can be pretty funny at times.

This topic again? Haven't we been here like, two billion times already?
I see lots of things that annoy me. All day long. Ugly cars, gross people, litter, crappy buildings, graffiti, right-wing politicians, badly written software, advertisements of all sorts. The list goes on and on.
If I let any of those things affect my enjoyment of life to any extent at all, I would be totally miserable all the time. So I won't.
Now if you take the occasional view of the intimate parts of a cute girl, that would be way down on the list, if it were there at all. Ditto for drawings of a character gender I'm not attracted to. Of course too much of anything is too much, and views of girl-parts are no different. Sooner or later no matter how horny you are you get bored. No matter how shallow you are you notice that it isn't a substitute for something creatively interesting.
So what's so hard to understand?

I don't usually comment in threads like this but I wanted to make somewhat of a technical comment about fanservice, panty shots in particular. A show could be really ecchi and have dozens of panty shots; or not so ecchi like a slice-of-life or drama and have only one panty shot. But if that one is very detailed and anatomically correct, the number of panty shots don't matter. When it comes to panties, quality is better than quantity. This is good because it allows for the enjoyment of one nice perverted scene and the rest of the show can be dedicated to story, plot, characterization and other elements. Plus on average, if there's more than 1 or 2 panty shots per episode, they will just be drawn half-assed (excuse the pun).
I want detail, so that the slight nub of the clitoris shows, and the ridge lines of the pair of labia and the very slight overall shape of flesh lifting up the cloth like a sandbar in a calm ocean. It's almost like there's no actual cloth in existence that can match the way it clings to the female pubic area in drawings. A real panty if too tight would distort the natural female features, too loose and they are lost in the ripples of the fabric. In anime it's as if panties have sort of a liquid coating quality, yet is not excessively shiny nor translucent, still adequately covering up the features while revealing them as if no underwear was being worn at all. This makes the presence of panties almost more erotic than the image of a bare and exposed nether region.
Shall I go on about how I'm also quite fond of adorable otokonoko in cute panties?

Too much of anything is too much, fanservice included.

I've never found fanservice to be a particularly attractive element in a show, it certainly doesn't turn me on, but I have a different reaction than some of my friends do. I have some friends that simply cannot watch a show if the fan service is too blatant, even if the rest of the show is great. I'm not like that. I have more of a humor reaction to it, generally, the more over the top and ridiculous the fan service (as in High School of the Dead), the more funny it is to me, just a sort of "seriously guys? What are you on?!" reaction. I could do without it though, outside of porn.

Nothing to see here, move along.
People like it for the tease and dislike it for being prevalent. Some may also dislike it because they think that cartoons should adhere to their personal morals or other trash like that.

Morals in America are definitely more puritan. The human body is considered sinful and must remain hidden here; so much that a bare of breasts can cause a huge uproar. In other parts of the world, nudity is seen as natural and not as big of a deal.

I am going out on a limb and guessing the topic of fan service is limited to content of the sexual variety and not hyper-reality, mechs, violence, mascot characters, and other content as describe by the ANN definition. Alrighty, let's get this show on the road.
When I pick up a show that has ecchi, fanservice, or yaoi/yuri as main theme/genre then I like to see as many panty shots and fan service as possible within the confines of the story. I feel the same way if a show has those themes as lesser elements in the show. There will be few fan servicey moments but I will still appreciate them for being attention grabbing.
There is nothing inherently bad about fan service and I have yet to see a show include too much of it. Of course the quality of fan service can be variable.
