Since this was a concern brought up by people here, I decided to post it. I first found out about it at the Mania forums.

Why is there no option for putting dvds inside bluray cases? Well whatever, I'm not fond of the dvd and bluray cases in one box because they'll need some spacer thing or whatever... so I just went with straight dvd cases.

That is question #1. In order to get a clean data set, I have to segment the options - ask specifically about the box and then ask specifically about the cases. After than, I can cross-tabulate the data sets. So far answers to every question is 50/50 but I'm not up to the 95% statistical confidence marks so the percentages should fluctuate a bit. Thanks for bringing this up.
Since I don't have a Blu-Ray player or have the set up for Blu-Ray, and hopefully I never have to, this is the perfect chance for me to voice my opinion on more DVD-based collector's options.

One thing that surprised me about the Ga-Rei-Zero BD/DVD combo pack was that there was no effort to distinguish the DVD from the BD. The only way to tell is to look for the small DVD and BD lettering at the "bottom" of the discs. Personally, I'd like some bigger identifier so that it is instantly obvious which is which.

The size of the cases don't matter to me. I did, however, have opinions on the size of the box. I don't want two cour shows to have two limited editions because that's too expensive, so I opted for one limited edition that holds the four cases. At first I thought it'd be cool to have to LE's, but then the money side started kicking in and it didn't seem as appealing. I also put in the comments how sequels that are two cour (Spice and Wolf, Heaven's Lost Property, etc) should be treated the same way. Even though they aren't technically the same shows, they're the same franchise and should be together since it's very much possible to make a 4-wide box; I love how the Mahoromatic art box holds season 1, season 2, and the Summer Special (Vandread's another). I can tell you right now that I'm not a happy camper about the thought of having the BD sized season 1 of Spice and Wolf having to sit next to the DVD sized art box of the second season (although I'll probably just take the DVDs out and put the BD of season 1 in the box in it's place)(no I won't sell the DVDs because I'm not a prick).
And I know from personal experience that putting BD cases in DVD art boxes fit fine, but looks wonky. The slipcovers Funi puts on their BDs helps make it about as a wide as a DVD without a slipcover. So it'd be better if they one way or the other with DVD cases or BD cases.
I think that was a last minute thing since the combo for GRZ was last minute (I'm sure you remember that it wasn't a combo initially). If you look at something like Vampire Bund, you'll see that it has the BDs and DVDs separated. I wanted to leave that in the comment box, but it doesn't bother me since I can switch them myself and art boxes are more important to me personally. |

@ TKoH - ah, cool - sounds like the GRZ sitch was a one-off and from here on in the two formats will be separated. That makes a ton more sense.

I have seconded such preferences. The current standard fails to tempt me in face the vast catalogue of older titles not yet released for it. (That is to say nothing of the increased prices and minimal production runs associated with such a medium.) |

Filled out the survey, hope Lance shares the results with us at some point. I'm in the camp where I'd just as soon see BD-sized cases used, but if FUNi sticks with DVD-sized art boxes, including BD cases with some sort of vertical spacer would drive me nuts.

I filled out the survey last night. For choice 3, I choose option 1. I would a slighter wider chipboard box or a just a slighter wider box so I can have both parts of a shows in one box. the other option I could see is just doing away with half season sets for half year shows (26) and just have one slightly larger set for these types of shows. For long shows (like Kaleido Star and Yu Yu Hakusho) I like the idea of having 2 or more sets having the episodes split amongst those sets.

I'm not sure if you know this, but the DVDs are R2-able (and R4), so you can import these combos and use the DVDs. Without those Region AB BDs included, I doubt Funimation would go through the hassle needed to have the rights to release stuff compatible with European players. Now, if you have a hacked DVD player it doesn't matter, but if you don't... So, really, if you're a European DVD collector that wants to import but don't have a region-free player, these combos are godsends. |

I am also at a loss why the most relevant option isn't available and this has me believing there's a price issue around here, namely "you can't have your cake and eat it to" when it comes to cases, inserts, and boxes. Makes sense, because the last thing FUNimation wants to do is print run the same insert for two case sizes. Given how anime fans can be pricks, I can easily see why a BD-sized insert won't be accepted on a DVD-sized case. Oh, the horror. 
Interestingly, this actually pertains to me given I strip the DVDs and inserts from their cases and toss the rest of the shit into the trash can. I then cut the insert and place it into the double-sided thinpak case. For me, I couldn't care less if the BD-size insert is used on a DVD-sized case. It's all about saving space for me, which isn't possible with any of the options presented. Oh well. If it gets bad, I'll just print out my own inserts like I've always done when companies sell me cases I can't use and their inserts are worthless. Good luck with the results. I certainly don't envy the person who'll have to make a decision from them. @The King of Harts: Your "prick" comment (which influenced my italicized version above) struck me as entertaining and I'd like to know why you feel this way. |

People on other forums are claiming to have sold off the DVD or BD copy that comes in the combo. And I was stating that if you're a person that does that, you're a prick. OK, I get that you're "never going to use it", but don't be a jackass because you have the maturity of a leaf and are afraid your DVDs/BDs are somehow going to be contaminated. Give it to your library, put it in storage and have it be your loaner, give it to your budding anime fan friends/family, donate it somewhere, put it in a box, throw it away, make them fancy coasters, do this, do anything else, but don't sell it. |
