Well that's good news. I haven't seen the newer episodes, but I'm assuming that they have been focusing on little side stories. It will be interesting to see where they take the second season.

Hm, I thought this was already all sorted out. What I'd heard (a couple weeks ago) was that Fuji TV was dropping the series from their main station, but it would still air on the satellite network, which apparently it already has been. However, it would only catch up to the next new episode (18) in January. Does this mean that the series is on hiatus, but that the new episodes will still air on the main Fuji TV network?
Not that it really matters, of course, as long as they air.

Now, Fuji has completely dropped it from their lineup, and it isn't really on hiatus, it's just a matter of cathing up.

It is possible, of course, that they're just repackaging eps 18 onwards as a second season...

Yeah just what happened with Gantz; "The First Stage" wasn't really the first "season," just that the rest of the episodes are being aired on satellite. I doubt there'll be an entire new series of Champloo.
