Exactly what qualifications do you need to teach an anime class at a community college, and (of course) how much would you get paid to teach it?

That might be a good question to send in to the answerman. He seems to be the perfect person to answer it
It's nice to see Anime gaining a larger influence especially in the "Academic" world. It's nice that no longer when you say you watch Anime you get responses like "You watch cartoons?" or "Isnt that like cartoon porn?". I know I'd take the course if it wasn't 3000 some miles away. I'd find it interesting to see what Zac thnks about the class now and what he thinks after teaching it. If he feels the same after having taught it and how he thinks the class benefited the stutdents. |

It would be the same for any other art teacher and the salary would be the same just like any other art teacher.

Would you provide some sort of evidence, please? This thread is over two years old, and unless you are going to provide some very interesting news of the topic, I'd like to request this thread to be locked. |

Go to the school you would like to work at and look into and ask. It's not rocket science. |

I don't know exactly what's needed to teach an anime class, but I'm under the impression that the professors are already teaching at the school, and they're the ones who suggested the anime class idea to the school. Example: two of my professors who've been teaching at my school for a number of years just got the ok from the dean to start an illustraition degree program.

I go to the Art Institutes International and one of the classes I'm taking is History and Trends in Animation. All you do is watch cartoons, take notes and do research. It is mostly American animation, but I did see an Anime Day on the syllabus. I think that is about as close as you'll come to studying anime in college outside of bribing Susan Napier to get into her anime class.

Taking a look at the kind of anime courses that *are* available, the credentials of the professors are usually the same as for any other course: at least a master's degree, and in most cases, a PhD, plus teaching experience. That is, you are not going to be able to walk into a university film or media studies department, offer to teach a class on anime, and actually have someone *listen*. On the other hand, if you've been in the department for several years and have already taught a number of courses, chances are, you have at least some degree of choice in developing your own.
The one other option is colleges (like Oberlin and MIT) that allow students to develop and teach courses that can be taken as general electives. In any case, the bottom line is this: teaching anime at college is NOT IN ANY WAY DIFFERENT from teaching any other subject at college. |

It is possible in some university systems to teach if you're highly qualified in your field as well. For example I've taken a American movie history class where the prof's credentials are that he's a movie aficionado, owns an art house theater, and helps in organizing the state film festival. He's an expert on the subject and sometimes (though never always) that's enough.
If you absolutly have to teach a class on anime, but are no where near qualified enough to teach a credited class, try adult ed. Adult ed classes are often tought by people in the community with a thorough understanding of their subject and a willingness to pass on what they know. They're held at schools and community centers after hours and are payed. With subjects like "Dry Flower Arranging" or "Digital Photography" (or my favorite, "How to use ebay") I'd imagine that "Intro to Japanese Animation" would have a place.
