With all of these negative buzz that One Piece (anime) is getting, I thought maybe I'll talk about the One Piece anime to add some light into the series. I will not comment on any fanscan, but only the current volume being released.
Presentation: The first thing that would usually catch your eyes is the Cover. One piece has one of the most attractive cover. The base color used on the cover varies from Green to a soft pink to a violet. The book has a glossy shine to it plus the title and other part of the cove is in a nice golden foiled Translation: I do not know how accurate they the translation that Viz has done but so far I seem to understand all the line in the bubble. It never made me confused, so I would rate the translation as good. But if you want to make a comparison make sure not to compare it to a fanscan. Art: Eiichiro Oda draws very nice character. They're definitely different from the convention anime character. In a way, One Piece has created its own style. I notice the black shading is very well done by Oda and makes the character stand out. Luffy's eyes, hair, hat and shirt stand out from the background. Oh yea, unlike the anime on foxbox, nothing is cut or edited that I know of so far. Extra: At the beginning off each of the 4 volume, it has a quirky comment by Oda that he made back when the volume was release in Japan. Also it talks about the author which is nice. Other extra include character cut-out, coloring page, Character profile, One Piece Q&A, Fan suggest and many other stuff which are all nice extra. I like to mention these because many manga don't include extra stuff like these. I will go into depth about the story once I have more time. The story is very cleaver and good, so discover it for yourself if you haven’t. The only downside I can see is the released date because it's serialized in Shonen Jump. But I don't mind waiting if it only cost 8 dollar per book rather than 10. This is definitely one of Shonen's Jump top title. |

One Piece is a very pleasant title, extremely hilarious. Some may say that it has crude art, or something undeserving, but overall I can say that the reason why it has become very popular in Japan and many other places is because it IS very good. This is definitely a good title to check out, if not add to your collection.

Yeah, I have read the first 13 volumes of One Piece, in its original form. Don't worry, I didn't download scanlations or anything like that, I bought them when I was in Japan last summer and the summer before that. Basically, heres the main differences between what you get from the originals, and what you get from Shonen Jump:
A) One Piece in Japan is way more crude, and has waaaay more language in it. You have no idea how much Shonen Jump censors (which is mostly a good thing.) Sanji, especially, has one of the dirtiest sailor's mouths imaginable. Heres the problem: I don't really mind a little swearing, and it makes for some really funny moments and adds to emotional moments as well. When I read Shonen Jump's version, it can sometimes make me feel that characters are a little off. But mostly, its not big deal. B) One Piece is not directed towards 7-18 year old boys, but rather everyone. I mean, not that 7-18 year old Japanese arent the main focus group, but I'd say just as many girls read One Piece as boys, and just as many Adults read it. In Japan, if I pulled out a copy of my one piece, id get alot of japanese asking me "Oh you read one piece? I love one piece" in broken english. Most of these people were over 18. And female. Shonen Jump, of course, is generally aimed towards young boys. Just a difference to be noted. C) Yeah, its neat that they are translation Eiichiro Oda's comments into english, but don't think your getting 100% of the SBS corner (thats what its called in the Japanese volumes, im not sure if its called something else in the american volumes. I only read the english version in the monthly shonen jump.) Eiichiro Oda swears, makes semi-obscene comments, and alot of his readers would write in with semi-obscene questions/comments that he would respond to. Now, i say obscene because your average american would find it obscene, Japanese culture is just different. I'll give you an example, though, of what you will most likely never be reading: One SBS a reader asks Eiichiro Oda what Nami's bust size is. After Sanji is introduced, someone asks again. So he tells them. Another example: Someone asks if Luffy's p*nis could stretch (because he's a rubber-dude, logically) and Oda happily replies 'yes' Anyhoo, all I can say is if you want to get the most out of my personal favorite manga of all time, learn japanese and import or something. Or, import and find translations online (i usually do this, because im not always sure of what im reading. Not 100% fluent yet ) But if this isnt possible, don't worry. Shonen Jump does a good job. Much better than some of their other translations. |

I want to read the Japanese one now...I knew that they censored a lot of stuff, but I didn't know that One Piece was really..."crude," meaning that it wasn't as tame as I thought. I also like the fact that Jump Comics published a Character Fact File, although i can't read it. Maybe eventually?

Well, this goes beyond, but as I did not want to start another one...
I just have something to say about something else I was musing over. In the last issue of Shonen Jump itself, you find out that spoiler[Zeff ate his own foot to give Sanji all the food, so Sanji is in debt to him.] However, biology-wise, this makes no sense! Protein is used last as a last resort by the body for fuel, and it didn't matter that he ate his own foot, it would've happened gradually ANYWAY, only from the inside out. Was just thinking, 'tas all. |

I love One Piece but I just can't bring myself to purchase Viz's version. I understand they are marketing it toward a younger audience, but the dumbing down really takes away from the initial experience I got when I read the japanese tankoubons. Oh, and I just can't stand Zoro's new name Zolo. Just say it out loud, it sounds so stupid. Zolo....
I'll stick to my Japanese tanks and maybe I'll buy that damn sexy One Piece First Log. But One Piece is still a great choice for North Americans looking to try out some manga. One of the best mangas to come out of Shonen Jump in Japan. |

I recall reading at Animerica's boards they had to change Zoro to due to a copyright lawsuit (Similiar to the Lupin/Rupan case from almost 20 years ago), then I read at a few boards that Viz had to change the name by Oda's request >_>
Bah, nobody can get their story straight. But I wanna know, what is "dumbed down" in the english adaption of One Piece? I mean really, this is a Shonen Jump series were talkin here, its not like it requires a rocket scientist to figure out. People still die, eat their feet, smoke, drink, ya name it. Although the pirate talk (which naturally includes swearing) has been toned down quite a bit. Still good...well, about as good as its gonna get. Gotta take what you have while its still a full meal, before it decays into something that doesnt taste half as good. Last edited by Izlude on Fri Apr 01, 2005 5:41 pm; edited 1 time in total |
