I can't think how many times I've seen a breakfast table depicted in anime include a Western-style garden salad (often including cherry tomatoes).
Most recently in The World of Narue, ep. 6. Is this actually common in Japan? Every time I see it, it strikes me as bizarre. |

Pickled vegetables are common, so "classier" breakfasts might serve fresh.
(Whenever I'm in a big-city hotel on the coasts that includes Japanese breakfasts on the buffet, I'm always tempted to have a hot J-style breakfast of rice, soup and kimchee, since it always seems more "nutritious" than pastries, pork products and real-egg cholesterol.) |

Yes, in Japan, when Japanese people eat bread for breakfast, also a garden salad is often served. Partly because of an idea that taking vitamins is good. Ms Yamanouchi Reiko, who lived in England for a long time, wrote:

It's a pleasure. Regarding his breakfast, in 1950, Mishima Yukio wrote:
It consisted of three slices of toast, a cup of milk, a boiled egg, a slice of roasted pork, a green salad, cabbage, a Japanese pear, and black tea. By the way, it seems that you were mentioned on 2ch, EricJ.

I don't think I could face a salad for breakfast.
But I'm not quite sure why that is. There are plenty of things I'm not used to that I'm perfectly open to trying. But the idea of a garden salad for breakfast somehow... |

This is one of the habits I picked up living in Oki that people often notice and comment on.

Haha I have had some wonderful breakfasts when visiting Japan. I always get excited when a proper green salad is available; people seem to put a lot more effort into that particular meal than in my country. |
