(Monsters, Inc. was released after the eligibility period for last year's awards.) Sniff, sniff... my favourite film of the lot, Lilo & Stitch, only got an award for Davleigh Chase's vocal performance. I have no idea if this is the "Bellweather award" which will predict which film will win the Best Animated Feature Oscar, but, if Spirited Away wins BAF, it just means I'll be rooting for the losing horse. Hey, Shrek won over Monsters, Inc. last year yet that didn't come close to changing my opinion that Monsters, Inc. is the better film of the two, by a fair amount. Spirited Away is a good film, and one of my 10 favourite films from last year, but Lilo & Stitch is in my top 5, and I'll still think it's the better film no matter what awards it doesn't win. |

I am sure most fans and Animators will look closely at the Annie Awards and the biggest prize: The Oscar. I have to admit the dubbed actress who did Sen was pretty good. Only time will tell if Spirited Away made any impact on the industry.
ASIFA is a really good organization for Animation. If anyone who wants to do any sort of animation I recommend becoming a member. I was a member from 1996-2001 at ASIFA-East (NYC). Ranmah |

The dub actress who did Sen/Chihiro won the award for best voice acting, because it was also Davleigh Chase, who was nominated for being the voice of Lilo in Lilo & Stitch.

Oh wait... Treasure Planet was nominated in some of the categories, and that was released at the end November 2002, whilst Monsters, Inc. was released at the beginning of November 2001. I gotta admit that I have no idea why the eligibility period for this year's awards seems to be at least 13 months.

That was because ASIFA decided to move the awards from November to February this year, causing a flood of competition for the awards this time. It's amazing that SIRITED AWAY still came out on top. I believe this is the first time a Japanese (and also maybe even the first foreign) feature animated film has ever taken home such major awards from the Annies. |

No, it's not a big awards show, at least from the perspective of the general public, but it's big if you're an animation fan. It's the animation equivalent of the Oscars, but, since animation fandom is a niche thing, it gets scant coverage in the mainstream press.
Because of the Annie, I'm almost certain, despite my own preferences, that Spirited Away will win Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, though I doubt it will make Miyazaki that much more of a household name in North America than he is already. My joke is that people that don't follow animation will think Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron will have won, if they remember that there's a Best Animated Feature at all. |

I was privledged enough to volunteer for the Annies (I was stage manager, so I met all the presenters and recipients
 ) and it is a great show to see. There was a representative from Ghibli that accepted the Spirited Away awards...sorry, no Miyazaki 
A lot of american animators respect what Japan does (and vice versa). It's funny that it's the fans that are quick to judge that "Japanese or US animation sucks". |

As a freelance animator/artist. My work has been greatly influenced by anime, especially Rumiko Takahashi. I love her complex stories and simple character designs.
I was a member of ASIFA-East and I had the opportunity to vote of short animated shorts. Some were really well done, while others were a boring set of images. I wish I got a chance to see the Annie Awards. Maybe in the future. Ranmah |

If you ever get your hands on a ticket to the Annie awards it is certainly well worth going. Not only do you get to see the many examples and selections from the films nominated (the vast variety of examples of animated films I saw there last year astonished me. I didn't realize there was so much great stuff out there) but one also gets a chance to see, talk, and rub elbows with the people in the industry who make the films. I got a chance to chat with Paul Dini and Bruce Timm (Batman Beyond/Justice League) at last years event and I also had a chance to see Bruce Smith (The Proud Family/Bebe's Kids) .
Sorry to miss out on this years event, hearing that Roy Disney was there. |
