Well . . .
okay.
It would have been nice to hear the songs in emglish though, but what can you do?
I'm glad Angel Beats is getting a dub in any case.

This should ease a lot of the concerns that some fans had about the prospect of this being dubbed. Songs can be dubbed successfully (see The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) and in other cases aren't dubbed but probably should be (see My-HiME), but I'm fine with these being left as is.

It was to be expected. Sentai was once ADV which didn't have a steady track record of dubbing in-character singing and the Japanese are hopelessly convinced their hit anime music is one step away from massive mainstream success over here. It wasn't likely they'd dub the singing.
Though I personally prefer any in character singing in an English dub to be done in English, if they can cast VAs that sound close enough to the original Japanese VAs that the singing doesn't shift jarringly away from the English performance, it will be just fine. My only concern is the flow of the vocals in this matter.
@ Key: Actually, while a slightly less Engrishy version would have been great, I thought It's Only The Fairy-Tale (I think that was the title) worked rather well in the English dub. It felt fairly natural somehow. (The bit when Mai starts singing however was a jarring shift, especially since it was so short.)
Looking forward to hearing how this comes out one way or another though. I've heard a lot of praise for this series so I have high hopes!

not necessarily good. sentai has terrible dubs if you watch their recent ones such as Clannad.
Just terrible.
It's VERY good news that they arnt gonna mess with the music...Girls Dead Monster is an amazing band and should not be disgraced with shoddy attempts at englishizing a song...something that's never been done properly by any studio.
Good decision Sentai. Still worried that you're gonna overcharge again though. If you are, I'll just wait for the amazon deals...they always sell your stuff for realistic prices after a few months.

Amazon does some great deals. Though, I never really wait since the preorder price is typically around $30 to $40 for Sentai BD releases.

Kougeru: Yes
Other: no
If you've actually seen the show itself you'll know that the songs are top tier and a major part of the series and does not need to be destroyed. And no God Knows dub version was not good stopping pretending that it was.

Why did you have to bring back bad memories? The dubbed songs were HORRIBLE.

Dub Japanese songs into English? That's absurd. These are not opening or ending themes we are talking about, these are full-fledged songs by a real band. If Sentai even tried to dub them in English the official Japanese band would sue their @$$ of.
I myself only hope that they release it as BD in its original 1080dpi quality. That is the only thing I ask for. In other words, please don't Funimation on us (giving us an upscale or worst).

No, pretty sure the singers are the only "real" ones here. And I don't think those are their songs anyway...

Looking at the happiness about the songs not being dubbed/the complaints of there being a dubbing possibility in the first place... I wonder if this is part of why several were holding out for Funimation to license the series. (Or at least, I thought that would've been pretty awesome.)
Seriously, at least a good number of you guys have seen the effort FUNI put into BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad, right? Their dub was freaking amazing... now granted, the original songs and feel of the show itself were far more suited to American/English tastes, but still... they did a phenomenal job. (Heck, I really liked Bandai's/BangZoom's dub of Haruhi as well.) If the same kind of talent and production values were to be put into the songs' localization, then I would've had no problem with the music being dubbed.

Good decision by Sentai, here! I'm now more eager to buy the BD.

I loved the dub, thank you very much.

GirlDeMo IMO is sub-par. The OP and ED songs are better. Besides, have we suddenly forgetton about "Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad"?

Something we agree on.

Well, I partly agree with you, since there are not many examples of good "dubbed" songs that were originally sung in Japanese, especially when companies seem not able to spend too much money in times of economic crisis. But I do believe it's possible, although it would be a very difficult task, for example the original Japanese songs need to have new English lyrics which means Sentai needs a talented songwriter who can refill the songs with English lyrics that fit and flow as well as the original Japanese songs, while keeping the true meaning/feeling of the songs. Then Sentai could have hired a (semi-)professional band that's good enough to sing these English "cover" songs, which means more investments for Sentai (=money+time). Also the Licensee needs to negotiate with the licensor about the English version of all these songs which probably means even more time and money needed to be spend.
And seriously, no-one in the American anime industry can sing "Ichiban no Takaramono" (the most powerful song in the show in my opinion) as well as LiSA. It's not that it can't be done in English (see above), it's more a matter whether Sentai wants to invest so much money and time in these songs, when anime is considered a niche market in America, well, it's not Disney after all.

*sigh* I'm a little less interested in buying this now. I'll have to put it on the backburner, but that actually really works out for me since my Summer is big enough as it is.

Well, nowadays it's part of negotiating the rights.
But back in the 90's, it was considered that so long as the song is part of the anime, it was fair game. So back then, the Japanese musicians didn't even think about it. And Pioneer and Viz used to dub songs, which eventually lead to releasing the soundtrack CDs.
