Their number one is mine as well! I think it's also one of the tropes more likely to be pulled off without failing. (coughsuddenkissescough) The other forceful behavior can be cute once... Or controlling.
Possibly why I keep my shoujo consumption at a minimum... |

These are incredibly generic, and you can find them in lots of non-manga romance works.
But who cares? I would like 1, 4, 6, 9, and 10, please!

Unfortunately, this one, "Turning to look behind them and being kissed by surprise" would only end badly unless it was a guy they were already with. Most scenes like this one are with guy/girls that aren't going out, and if by chance some guy did this to a girl and she wasn't interested in him, it would only end badly.

Number 3 just makes me laugh. It doesn't take a romantic to know that sounds like your are talking to a animal (a dog for instance) rather than a person. What's next, are you reward her with a dog treat?
Could be off base a little bit, but I sure don't hear that line to others besides pet's very often. |

Welcome to "different cultures have different gender relationship values."
I agree that #3 is patronizing and condescending (again, different cultural values on the relationships between men and women), but I actually have seen #9 done well, and it's always this heart-rending thing where he has to leave and you're there to see him off, and you don't want to be without him, but he has to go, and at the last minute, he's like "screw it, come with me!" and all the audience goes "SQUEE~~!!" Sure, in real life it might result in your falling under the tracks and dying (not to mention having to have your luggage sent to you), but that's why it's a silly little romance trope.

Ah, if you put it that way, I guess it does sound nice. The way it said in the survey about "being dragged on to the train" made it sound more like a kidnapper taking someone hostage to me.

As a man, the list made me lol so hard. But to be honest, we shouldn't try any of these stunts unless they already know the other person pretty well.

Ugh, all those 'taken by surprise' ones? No thanks. Especially if I wasn't already dating the person. There are some really annoying and patronising ones in there as well.
A lot of scenes in fictional romance are loads of fun to read about or watch, but I'd never want it to happen to me in real life. |

The thrid one is both ridiculous and concerning but I think the rest of them are all cute. There is definitely something to be said for the 'You're going out with me' approach especially when compared to some of the wimpier harem characters who are all 'ums' and 'errs' though in real life I'd probably take it for arrogance...

Wow. If this is what women have been brainwashed into thinking romance is... damn that's sad. It's not these little moments that are romantic, it's the overall relationship. These motions without that love are worthless and hollow. Just because it's in manga form, that doesn't make it any less hollow and emotionally pornographic than a Lifetime movie of the week.
I'm rather reminded of the words of Don Draper from Mad Men,
Then again I consider myself a hopeless romantic in a world filled with this hollow false romance.
Nice to see so many women love being treating like a pet dog. Holy crap that's sad. That one alone says a hell of a lot about how feminism is failing in Japan. Anyone else want to note how so many shojo manga, especially if these are the tropes that sell, is as anti-feminist as horrible shonen harem manga after reading this? |
