Has the American manga industry sunk so low as Twilight winning as manga of the year?
Or is this award based upon sales figures? I could see that, based upon the Twilight franchise is targeted to the female tween market. |

This award is undoubtedly based on sales. How else could Naruto and Twilight be considered the best manga in America?

I hate you Twilight for invading my fandom. I had heard people say Twilight is considered anime because it has manga books out. I mean....what?
I'd be damned if they actually made a Twilight anime. Ugh.... Last edited by Rukiia on Fri Feb 25, 2011 8:11 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I was going to post some snark about "quality" and "creativity" having nothing to do with Naruto or Twilight, but I realize that 75% of the people who post in here are going to say just that, so really there's no need for me to contribute.

How is the Twilight graphic novel even considered manga? Barring the fact that it was released in English in the United States before other territories/nations, Yen Press has barely marketed it as manga (if at all). Also, it isn't that creative. I'll give it quality, only because the paper quality, hard cover, and artwork were nice.
While I dislike Twilight and its related media, I do like that Yen Press is getting some cash out of this. (Daniel X and Maximum Ride seem to be having the same effect, though The Clique and Gossip Girl don't seem to be doing as well.) It means that they can license some other quality series from Japan and S. Korea, and perhaps fund some nice American comics. |

What a HORRIBLE JOKE this is!!!
Twilight is the GN of the Year, I don't know whether to cry or die of laughter. ....and previous winners was Naruto??? There is no doubt that the "award" is solely based on SALES and nothing else. This is a HUGE reason why nobody takes any "American" awards for anime or manga serious. |

Of course it's based off of sales, this is coming from one of the largest graphic novel/comics/nerd media distributing groups. Geez you guys...

Haters can hate all they want - Naruto volume 48 was - hands down - some of the best shonen art and story I have ever read. Naruto vol 28 was also the time skip volume and not some cruddy random volume of a long running shonen series.
But oh well, what's a reader going to do? Haters are going to always hate, and never have an open enough mind to see that something they hate may actually have value somewhere. As to Diamond giving out awards, the very idea is laughable in my mind. They only look at sales and obviously don't really know jack about what they're selling if they think Twilight counts as manga. |

Twilight… is the best manga to Diamond? Brilliant. Now I like Yen Press and I’m glad it made money for them, but that book was no more manga than a Rob Liefeld comic is. How many hundreds of manga were better done than that Twilight garbage? You can’t escape that manga is a Japanese word for Japanese comics. You could nitpick and say they used a Korean artist, thus making it manhwa, but it’s still an American publication based on an American book and all produced by an American company. Well, I guess to Diamond all Asians are the same and if you draw huge manga eyes on a character they might as well be Japanese. I keep saying it. We used to be racist and say the Japanese all looked the same with their ’slant eyes’. Now the old racist stereotypes show up conversely and say comics are Japanese if they have their large cartoon eyes.
Never mind Diamond sucks for manga anyway. My old shop used to get titles I ordered late if at all. The one I would find missing volumes at and now go to for manga actually changed distributors. Diamond was constantly failing them. So when it comes to manga, don’t even bother with Diamond. Too bad for American comics retailers don’t have another option besides them. |

Actually last year, I read a article here that stated the author of said series was actually considering a anime of the series. I am not sure if it actually is in the works, but if there is a manga out, the chances of a anime is possible I suppose. |

Anyway, not too surprised on the Twilight thing. I mean, how many weeks did it spend on the Bestseller list? Obviously this was more of a sales thing over anything else, yes, but still, it was a big thing for Yen Press as well as for trying to bringing anime and manga more into the mainstream. Don't know if it really achieved the latter, however. |

I kind of hope they DO make an anime based on Twilight, because one of two things will happen: it'll flop, and cost the franchise a lot of money; it will be really really popular, draw lots of new fans into anime, lead to anime booming in popularity again, and our dvd prices will drop.

How the F@#K is THAT considered "creative". 1, Twilight is a ripoff of books that were written in the 90's; 2, the characters are boring; 3, its a f'ing ADAPTION; 4, of COURSE its going to sale if its in WALMART right NEXT TO THE BOOKS WRITTEN BY THE OTHER BOOKS BY THE AUTHOR.
It irritates me that THAT garbage won since the award is for "manga" which if a genre for the Japanese serial comics whilst the Twilight adaption is a graphic novel; same with Return to Labyrinth, and the Dark Crystal graphic novels. They also take American comics and put them into graphic novels. ...I'm sure if you walk up to American comic fans and call Superman a manga, they'll probably argue with you on the fact. I'll stop ranting now but a comic NOT written in Japan is not manga in my eyes. /end rant. |
