Say, do you have animes that you would've liked if it weren't for some minor flaws like some characters that bothered you or the drawing style?

Often I find myself unable to watch certain popular animes because I get distracted by the certain flaws holding me back from finishing it. Even if that anime has the positive feedback because of a good story and characters, I have hard time watching it through. The examples are Code Geass and Clannad.

Both animes are immensely popular but they all have in my opinion hideous drawing. Of course, I would probably be the minority. Aside from the drawing style, several other things in Code Geass threw me off from watching it all the way to the end, I decided to watch Clannad. Honestly, I thought it was good but overrated. Rather than watching anime, I felt like I was watching a soap opera. I found all the characters hard to like and feel sympathy for what they were going through. Hardly impressed with Clannad, I decided not to continue with the after story.

What I'm trying to say is if I'm greatly bothered by the drawing style or the characters that appear often, I find the great animes not all that good as people make them to be. So are you like me or are you hardly bothered with minor flaws?

Minor flaws, if they are outweighed by other positive things, are not a problem. I can like a show despite its flaws, especially if they are minor.

That’s because Clannad is a soap opera. The only difference is that in Japan that sort of thing are made also for boys, while the rest of the world makes soap operas for females.

As far as Code Geass is concerned, I like it. It is entertaining, as it altered clichés. For example: C.C., the green/blue haired girl is typically another unemotional clone of Rei Ayanami that can be suspected of suffering from autism. However, C.C. more than that and shows her claws*. Suzaku would be the protagonist and Euphy, after rambling tirades against war, would take an important position. For this alone, I found Code Geass worth watching.

*In the first season, I’m not writing about the second season.

First of all it's the drawing style that bugs me. It's too weird for me to like. It felt so cold and robotic. They all looked so deformed and bodies were in weird proportions. In Code Geass, The design of the main character bothered me. I mean it would have been intentional to draw him that way since he is an anti-hero but it bothers me. I don't like the drawing of supporting characters either. I get distracted by the minor things even if the story is good.

I guess any animes that I usually like, it's the characters that matter for me the most especially the main or supporting character for me is important. Even if the story is mediocre or non-existent, as long as the character interaction is superb and willing to try something different, I want to watch it. For Code Geass, I couldn't stand the main character Lelouch, his attitude or the arrogant smirk, I think the drawing design of him made it worse. My impression on supporting characters were not too memorable either. The villain in the beginning was stereotypically evil but total pushover. He seems to abuse his power because he can other than some other good reasons. By episode 3, I had enough.

Even though I watched Clannad to the end, it was rather forgettable. It was too soap opera-ish and I liked none of the characters. I admit there were bits and pieces of plot I liked but that's about it. And I'm not too fond of moe stuff, there were too much of it. Some plots seemed too forced to care about it. These are pretty much the reasons I'm not fond of Clannad.

The last reason I don't like Code Geass is, I never liked mecha anime in the first place. I didn't grow up on mecha nor have any fascination with it. As long as the story doesn't have to do with mecha, I'm keen on watching that anime. The only anime that I liked with mecha was Evangelion because I liked the recurring theme of revelation.

I've yet to find an anime were the art itself put me off from an otherwise good story- I've more likely to go the other way around and put up with art I don't especially like to get the story- Honey and Clover being the standout example. Id've never bothered if I didn't get to start the manga 'for free' in Shojo Beat. (I was hooked when Morita jumped out the window for his lecture. Wink)

Jubei-Chan has always stuck with me as a show I think I'd like a lot better if it weren't for the lead. It's got all the makings of an above- average action comedy... except for spoiler[Jubei's constant rejection of her powers. Even the most reluctant heroine accepts her role at some point... Jubei continues to willingly throw the eyepatch at any villain who tries to kill her friends and family, pretty much right up until the last episode. It drove me CRAZY. Quit whining and just fight the @#$%, you stupid @#&^!! I never bothered with the second season. ]

I just watched Escaflowne and gave up watching it because I couldn't take the plot too seriously. I mean the story execution was fine but couldn't watch the romance unfold with a straight face. This anime seems like it's for girls with mecha action. I usually enjoy animes aimed for girls but there were too much side story I didn't care about. I guess I couldn't find enough good points to keep watching it. Any characters that I seemed to like were the ones with the main characters but not important to the plot.

On the other hand, I like slice of life show, I hardly have a problem with watching it. The only one I had problem with was Best Student Council because at times it got weird. However it was amusing and some jokes were good to make up for the lack of story.
