Hey all! I was google-searching to learn more about how recent anime are made without much luck. ^^; I know most shows are computer generated now. I was wondering around what time cel animation stopped being what we primarily saw? And are cels ever still used today?
It's something I've been curious about for a while, any sites you guys know of or trivia would be awesome. |

Although not perfect, but I would start here: Wikipedia's List of Animations.
From there on you may find some pages of interest. Of course, you know, that Toy Story (1995) was the first fully CGI animation movie. |

Thank you! It seems to be easier to find info about movies than TV series. I *think* it was around 2000 cels stopped being used as frequently, but I'm not positive.

The first completely digitally animated film was Disney's The Rescuers Down Under in 1990.
The last feature film completely animated using hand drawn cels was Princess Mononoke in 1997. Be careful not to confuse computer aided traditional animation with 3-D computer animation like Toy Story. If you are interested in animation in the 1990's I highly recommend the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty. It's about the Disney animation renaissance 1984-1994. |

Mahoromatic was among the last cell animated anime (I have a feeling that Something More Beautiful was one of the first digital anime, but don't quote me on that).
From what I remember of the extras on the Mononoke DVD, it was partially coloured digitally due to time problems. The most recent information I've seen on the production of anime is from the extras on some Kyoani DVDs (Kanon IIRC). The basic process is drawing the individual frames on pencil and paper, which are then scanned, cleaned up and digitally coloured before being composited with background art and digital effects. I expect at some point there will be a switch to using graphics tablets for the original drawings but that requires outlay, a break from tradition and would probably require that the same be done at all the places that animation is outsourced to also for consistency so.... |

thread related to this on here not to long ago. Don't know title. Something about Golden Age of anime....in reality the thread was just trying to determine the history of anime. Anyway find it hard to believe you could not find any articles. Use a different search engine.
