Well, I'm sure that a lot of us have been hoping that it'd get a chance in the spotlight ever since it was submitted for nomination a while back, but this morning, the nominees for the 2011 Academy Awards were announced, and Summer Wars was not among the nominations for Best Animated Feature.

http://movies.msn.com/academy-awards/nominees-list/

It lost out to Toy Story 3(which was a given and is probably gonna take home the prize), The Illusionist, and How to Train Your Dragon.

Aw, well. Have the movie pre-ordered and I'm still really looking forward to it. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

That's a shame but probably was to be expected considering what it was going up against. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to watch it in theaters recently and also have it pre-ordered. **High fives for all of us who support Summer Wars!**

I haven't seen Summer Wars so I really don't know how much it deserved a nomination. I am however, rather surprised, that Tangled didn't get in there. I've seen both Toy Story 3 and How to Train Your Dragon (which I personally think should actually win, though I agree that Toy Story 3 is pretty much a shoe-in, especially since it's up for Best Picture period) and I really feel like Tangled is just as good as both of them, or at least close enough to warrant a nomination, especially when only 3 movies are up there.

I haven't seen a damn one of the movies nominated, tbh. I was just pulling for Summer Wars because besides the fact that I'm getting it and looking forward to seeing it more than the others, I'm all for an anime getting extra exposure.

I have a feeling that once The Illusionist comes out widely any true animation and film fan will have no problem understanding why it got the third spot.

I am giving a sad face. Crying or Very sad See that is it there.

But I would be lieing if I said that I did not really enjoy Toy Story 3, and the Dragon one wasn't bad either. But I had not even heard of the other one, a google image search shows something that looks interesting though.

Well I would guess that Summer Wars as it is has not gotten the attention it deserved, it would probably make alot of people wonder why it was nominated. There is barely anything over here about it, mostly only if you checked the site of Madman which is the main destributer of anime, I was happy hearing though that is on DVD soon.

Personally I thought it was much better then say the other few anime movies that got a lot attention *cough*Ghibli*cough* but I am not a big fan of those as other anime.

Which Ghibli movies are you referring to, exactly? Surprised The latest ones that got at least a considerable amount of attention, Spirited Away//How's Moving Castle/Ponyo?

Take your pick, I think they are alright, they just don't blow me away. I am usually left thinking that "That was nice, but just doesn't sit entirely right with me".

Unlike Summer Wars that had me wowing over a few things, and the notes hit a chord with me. I so wish that I would have been able to see it at the theatre, but the only theatre I really get to go to is one which only shows popular family movies, which is fairly cheap unlike where they were likely being shown. *sigh*

Well regardless it comes out in March. I know what I will be buying then.

Thats sad because those are all half-assed movies in my opinion. I heard the story to Toy Story 3 only took a couple days to write.

All three nominations are good ones-- unfortunately even if there'd been 5 slots, I still don't think Summer Wars would have made it in. There was just a lack of any interest at all from the general public and critics alike. (Unlike the Illusionist, which was getting hyped forever in general publications.)
Anyway, Toy Story 3 is totally gonna win. But How to Train Your Dragon... I actually prefer it Shocked

After realizing why there are only three nominees, I guess I can see why Tangled was overlooked after all. It's a shame one more movie wasn't up for consideration, since I'm sure there are more than a couple of films that could have filled up the 4th and 5th slot that would have become available.

You know what, that's kinda how I felt about Spirited Away. It won this award in 2002, but I just really don't think that movie is all that great. I like the 3 Ghibli movies I mentioned, but I'm hoping+expecting Summer Wars to be better than those 3. Though I'm sure Summer Wars will be awesome, I'm positive I won't like it as much as I love earlier Ghibli works(such as Nausicaa, which is one of my favorite anime(and is getting re-released on BD/DVD in March), and Princess Mononoke, which is my favorite anime, and which I own). I think those 2 movies are far better than the 3 movies the two of us just talked about.

Nah, dude--it comes out in about 3 week. Feb. 15.

I'm pretty sure Summer Wars and Tangled would've made it in if there were the extra spots. And yeah, unlike Spirited Away, Summer Wars didn't have much hype in its release back when SA won the Oscar, unfortunately.

I'm in Australia, Madman managing to get it out in mid March is pretty good with them, a month after is not bad at all. I think Madman was also pushing for it to get nominated too.

Well on a simulary rather pointless note I also want to check out the Summer Wars dub because apparently most of the voice actors to be involved in the Rosario Vampire dub did voices in it. Anyone mind telling me how the voice talent was in the dub release, it is not like they just chucked big names in to get attention right?

The Illusionist really was quite good. Summer Wars in my opinion was... not very interesting, but really, it's no surprise that they lost to a high-budget US production.

Oh, c'mon, Oscars, what is the point of having a "Best animated category" when you went and dumped Toy Story 3 into the "Best picture of the year" category too? They did that last year with Up, it kinda takes the suspense out of it, y'know?

I do have to question if maybe Funimation should have waited until January to put Summer Wars into theaters and go for the 2011 Oscar (I think Secret of Kells came out in March 2009, so also pretty early), Toy Story 3 is kinda massive Oscar bait and was practically guaranteed a spot and there were only 3 spots this year anyway, hopefully in 2011 there might've been 5 spots to increase chances, but at the very least Toy Story 3 wouldn't be in the way.

I will watch The Illusionist at some point though, I did that with Secret of Kells when I learned of its existence, I still think picking Up over it was the logical choice, but Secret of Kells was still really good.
