| Aqua (manga) | Very good | Read this because I was curious if this would give more background on the Aria setting. It doesn't really give more info, it's just the first few chapters of the Aria story, from before the title was changed. Most of this is also covered in the anime (though not all contiguously). |
| At The Mountains Of Madness (manga) | Decent | A decent adaptation of HPL's story in manga form. It cuts down on reading time by omitting HPL's looong rambling descriptions, but that also means you practically have to have read the original in order not catch small details in the drawings. Now and then extra details are added that aren't necessary, but they don't change much overall. The drawings of the aliens are fairly close to HPL's descriptions though, and I found it an interesting solution to make the aliens' history a separate chapter slightly removed from the story. The original felt kinda weird in how the characters figure out all of that from simple murals. I don't think this quite makes for a good substitute for the original, but it's interesting. |
| Double House (manga) | So-so | Found this under 'GID' at BakaUpdates. It's not really about that though. Just a crossdresser and a girl hanging out together. It's really slice-of-life in that nothing really happens. No romance, no plot. And it's short. It feels a little unfinished, but wasn't really going anywhere, so.. :/ |

| .hack//AI buster (light novel) | Very good | Hmm, I wonder if the translators actually played the games. Several terms are slightly off from their game translations. Ah, so this story was written at the same time as the games and anime. That's why some details are different. They're only minor ones though. Volume two's stories are spread out from before .hack//SIGN, during that anime, four years later, and finally shortly before the start of .hack//Legend Of The Twilight Bracelet. The first four stories give some interesting background on The World and CC Corp.. The last two are short vignettes about some characters from Legend. If you're just casually interested in the .hack// anime or games, this isn't very important. For those who want to know all about The World this is a must-read. |
| (The) J.K. of the Vampirelady (manga) | Good | Hmm, Seifuku No Vampiress Lord or this title.. I guess both have their flaws. Anyways, this has some cuteness and comedy, but also some annoying guys. Sure, Irie makes it clear she dislikes them just as much, but they're still there. Up to ch.13 as of 2019-08-26. Seems to be stalled: last update was 145 days ago as of 2019-11-09. Hoh, it's back. Seemingly with another hiatus after ch.27.5, but it turns out the manga's finished. Cut somewhat short, but finished. Yeah, Aya&Ruri's story felt incomplete/rushed, and the school story felt like it was building up to something that never came about. Then the vampires ending also kinda didn't quite fit with the rest of the story, at least not as it had developed thus far. Ah well, Yuunagi×Nanase was still really super sweet, and the ending was somewhat satisfying. |
| Kabu no Isaki (manga) | Very good | Another manga by Ashinano (of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou). It's another slightly mysterious setting, this time a world that's become ten times larger. Ashinano's love of flying and engines comes through clearly. A big question introduced in the last two volumes (Isaki dreaming of what looks like the normal world) is left unanswered, which is a little frustrating. Otherwise it's another lovely slice-of-life story. |
| Kemono Friends: Welcome to Japari Park (manga) | Decent | This one has a slightly different setting than the anime (no Ceruleans, more city), and has a park attendant named Nana, Red Fox and Serval as main characters. The art style is much more detailed (it is a manga after all). Overall, the mood is a little more everyday, less exuberant than the anime. A nice addition, but not as good as the anime (and no replacement anyway because the stories are unrelated). |
| Konohana Kitan (manga) | Excellent | A bit confusing, since this manga has only one entry on ANN, but two on Baka-Updates, Konohanatei Kitan and Konohana Kitan. I'm not sure if the latter is a remake or sequel or AU of the former. Anyway, the former has been completely scanlated, the latter only the first chapter. I've read all that's available, and the anime seems to be based on the former. Same comments as there, a nice and sweet yuri slice-of-life story. |
| Kotonoba Drive (manga) | Good | This seems to be a sequel to Ashinano's earlier PositioN. Same main character, but a few years older. (2015-09-26) Caught up on this manga again. Recent chapters feel different from earlier ones. One more character, but less mystery. Read up to ch.28 (2017-05-02). And finished (ch.35, 2018-03-31). It's nice to see Suu made a friend who can see the same things. I guess most of the mysteries will never be explained. That's how this manga is. Kinda sad that it's ended, but I think it's good too. It wouldn't do to stretch it out too long. I look forward to whatever Ashinano will make next. |
| Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid (manga) | The anime indeed covers mostly the first 6 vols. of this manga. A few details are left out of course, and some tiny bits of vol.7 are included. The rest of the manga is pretty much the same. The tournament arc ends early because all of the main characters are eliminated. The other competitors have by then become friends too, but even for them it's only a brief summary later on, without even a conclusion. The girls' past becomes the focus next, with Sieg(linde) ((Sieg)fried) and Cro(zelg) joining the Einhart (Claus) & Vivio (Olivie) story. In the end it's only about discovering that past though, there's not much resolution. Ix(pellia) doesn't play a role in that arc. After that it's more battles, Ix semi-waking up in chibi form, a visit to Rio's home country with many new characters introduced, and finally a closing battle between Vivio and Miura (during which Ix also wakes up for real) and Vivio and Nanoha. The latter I suppose serves as some closure for the long-time Nanoha fans who didn't get much since the training camp very early in the manga. Overall it's an okay story, without any long-term plot. It's always all positive, so that's good. There's also a ridiculous amount of fanservice, and of not even teenaged girls at that. It's nothing new for the Nanoha series, but it feels worse than most of the anime series and movies. It makes it very hard to recommend really. |

| Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (manga) | Excellent | Finally got around to reading this again. I thought it was more different in tone from the movie than it turned out to be. Nausicaä doesn't die and get revived by the ohmu like in the movie, but most other events happen in some way in the manga (although often in different context or to different people). Nausicaä does almost die or is left for dead several times though, and she gets worshipped by many people. Even the legend is there (although again in a different setting). Otherwise the manga is especially much longer and dwells more on the politics and religion of war and pollution. The last volume (7; also about 1½ times as long as the others) has two unnecessary plot twists (the crypt being alive, and humans not being able to live in a purified world) and an unnecessary event (the immortal/heedra illusionist). The journey back from death in vol.6 is also too long-winded. And Kushana's story is also kinda meh after her army is lost off-page. Asbel and Ketcha I didn't really care for to begin with. Selm was rather deus-ex-machina, appearing and disappearing without any backstory. The resolution at the end was just a small textbox. After such a long story I'd like to see more of what happened afterwards, especially regarding Nausicaä herself. All in all, definitely worth reading if you like the movie, with a really interesting and complex world, and good art, but not without flaws. |

| Orion (manga) | Decent | Saw this referenced as having some Cthulhu mythos influences. This old flipped translation was a little hard to dig up. I can see why it's kinda obscure though. This thing is super heavy on weird terminology. Which in his afterword the author admits and basically dismisses as taking inspiration from umpteen sources without trying to make much sense. In other words, just read the story and ignore the mumbojumbo. As a story it's also not super great. I can see how it was maybe inspired a little by Lovecraft&co.'s stories, but it's kinda limited to the overall idea of summoning something bad&powerful, and some creature designs here and there. It takes more inspiration from Buddhist and Japanese mythology really. This manga's not really worth bothering to get, but if you have it it's not too bad (helps that it's not too long). |
| Our Dreams At Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare (manga) | Very good | Pretty good manga about LGBTA family and coming out to yourself. I wish the ace and trans characters would've gotten more attention, but it's really good regardless. |
| PositioN (manga) | Good | Another short manga by Ashinano of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. This one has an ordinary setting, but with some little magical things happening. None of it is elaborated on, just left mysterious. |
| Restaurant to Another World (manga) | Very good | Oh, I thought the anime was based on this manga, but it turns out both are based on LNs. Anyway, this is really good. A lot of overlap with the anime as expected, but also some stories and details that aren't there. |
| Roman Club (manga) | Decent | Paranormal investigation club. I read this because Amano. Apart from one character's design looking like Aria's Woody, it's not like that manga at all. It's also short, only two chapters. |
| Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (manga) | Excellent | Such feels.. Many questions. But, wow. And I don't mean that in a silly way. It really is an awesomely special manga. Bittersweet at times, often just sweet and relaxing. It leaves many questions unanswered, but it's still one of the best iyashikei stories ever. |
