I cannot believe that this did not occur to me until just now, but, like all Far Eastern cultures, Japanese culture has this bad habit of "visiting the sins of the fathers upon the sons." So ─ in this situation ─ wherein Aoi must atone for her grandfather's sin, the concept is so obvious in Japanese culture that the connection wouldn't even warrant any explanation for a cartoon that is intended for a Japanese audience. ↔ |
