Anime NYC to Screen Makoto Shinkai's Weathering With You Film

The staff of the Anime NYC convention announced on Wednesday that GKIDS will screen Makoto Shinkai's new film Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) as the closing film of the convention. The screening will be the film's East Coast premiere.
The film will open in North America on January 17. Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) hosted the North American premiere of Weathering With You as part of its Special Presentations category, with screenings on September 8, 10, and 14. Japan submitted the film for consideration in the Best International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards. The film will also screen at the Hawai'i International Film Festival (HIFF) on November 17.

The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The film opened in 359 theaters and 448 screens in Japan on July 19. The film sold 1,159,020 tickets for 1,643,809,400 yen (about US$15.22 million) in its first three days in 358 theaters. The film ranked #1 in its opening weekend. The anime has sold 10.22 million tickets and earned 13,619,583,250 yen (about US$125 million) as of Sunday. The film is currently the #7 highest-earning domestic film of all time in Japan and the highest-grossing film in Japan this year. This year's Anime NYC will be held at the Javits Center in Midtown Manhattan from November 15 to 17. Last year's event had 36,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 15 countries.
