posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
This year's 41st issue of Shueisha's Young Jump magazine is announcing on Thursday that Kenichi Tachibana and Yū Sasuga's Terra Formars manga will spawn a spinoff manga series in the November issue of Ultra Jump on October 18. Satoshi Kimura (no relation to the Terra Formars anime's character designer Satoshi Kimura) will draw Terra Formars Gaiden Rain Hard about German team officer Adolph Reinhard.
The story of the original manga begins in the year 2577, hundreds of years after scientists sent cockroaches and mold to terraform Mars. However, when the first manned ships land on Mars, they encounter large humanoid cockroaches with great strength, and are wiped out. Humanity then sends elite warriors to Mars to eliminate the cockroaches.
Sasuga and Kenichi launched the original Terra Formars manga in 2011. The first volume has 1 million copies sold, while the total series has 8.78 million copies sold. The manga ranked at #3 on the Da Vinci magazine's list of the best male-oriented comics in the first half of 2013. The manga also topped the male readers category of the 2013 edition of the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook. The manga was nominated for last year's Manga Taisho award.
Viz Media has licensed the manga for North America.
The television anime will adapt the Annex 1 arc of the manga starting on September 26 at 24:30 (effectively, September 27 at 12:30 a.m.) The companion original video anime (OVA) project adapts the Bugs 2 arc on discs bundled with the 10th and 11 manga volumes. The Annex 1 arc takes place 20 years after the Bugs 2 arc.
