Nintendo's 1st Free-to-Play Is Steel Diver, Not Mario or Pokémon

Nintendo executive Shigeru Miyamoto told IGN that his company's first free-to-play title will be a version of Steel Diver. "We're exploring from a perspective of where we can take that from a multiplayer standpoint - it's going to have this four-player battle mode that I think is going to be very interesting."
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told analysts last week that his company is not planning to offer free-to-play games for established franchises such as Mario or Pokémon. "With games like Mario and Pokémon, we already have a sufficient degree of trust with our consumers who are willing to pay a certain sum of money to purchase our products as packaged software. On the other hand, what are we to do when we want to offer a completely new product whose value consumers are yet to understand?"
